Here's a write up about the recipe about Adam Perry Lang's recipe in Serious Barbecue. Haven't tried this one myself, but that book is a winner overall

Follow APL'a tenderloin recipe to the letter. No shortcuts. Best tenderloin.

I prefer cutting filets out of the best parts and using the rest for other things. Lots of silver skin and sinewy parts in a whole tenderloin so cooking it whole can be a mixed bag. The middle bits (filet) are always good but the head has all kinds of stuff going on and can be really chewy and tough. There is also a chain of really tough bits running down one side. I'll be glad to stop over if you want to learn to butcher it. Otherwise, the APL way should be awesome but you will have some very chewy bites in places.

Ibid to what Cen-Tex said. If you have never cleaned a tenderloin then be prepared for some work and waste. We take the head, chain and tail and grind and make hamburgers (only time i will eat a hamburger cooked to 124). Cut some up for fillets and keep center for Chateaubriand. Just remember, this is not a working muscle and there is no fat, so dont cook it past 130.Large, small and mini now Egging in Rowlett Tx

Yes, don't cook a whole untrimmed tenderloin for all of the reasons above. When I cooked the APL recipe at Christmas, I used a trimmed one that I cut further into two or three manageable sections. Trimming them isn't that bad, but if you don't want to or don't have time, Sam's or Costco (or probably any butcher) will do this for free.

This is my go to recipe for beef tenderloin. Marinate overnight. It is delicious.
