Water to table - "Mahi" kind of day

Went for tuna again, but no love.  The weather was nice, and the ocean was flat calm 75 miles out. There was lots of life out there including whales and hundreds of dolphin. At one point we had a a personal escort by about a dozen and a half. After trying for hours for tuna and only getting rats, we stopped and we tried for Mahi. We did real well.  Landed over 50, and kept the mid size ones.

Last 20 miles we limped in on one wheel at 9 knots, as we had shaft issue on the the port side.  Sea tow took us through the inlet and back to the barn.  Damn boat.

Dusted with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, white pepper, thyme, and cayenne pepper, grilled at 400 direct. Yumm....

Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.

Gaffer dolphin are probably one of the most fun fish in the world to catch.......fight like hell! Always keep one fish struggling in the water and the school will stay around.....the first Mahi you catch will be the size of all......mark floating debris or weed lines on gps during early morning run and the revisit late afternoon with remaining cut up ballyhoo as bait......we always clean one on the boat for the freshest sushi ever.......often this takes the sting out of not catching many whites on the trip.......and provides a wonderful meal that evening!.......I'd rather catch them than the marlin anytime.......an absolutely beautiful fish in the water........geez, waxing poetic here.....

Nothing on a boat is cheap.  Nothing.  Needed a new a stainless steel hatch pull - $42. New latch for the freezer $62. So for $100 I can open one door and keep another closed. This fix, the estimate is, well let's just say that I could get an xxl and an xxl and a few accessories.

That is pure awesomeness. Caught mahi once with buddies. Grilled one right out of the sea and everyone had one they caught mounted. Pricey, but it's great to have hanging.

I just love the colors of mahi. They look awesome in the water. Damn good eating, especially the same day.
Sorry to hear about the prop shaft. Everything with boats is expensive.
Looks like the weather has been cooperating lately as far as not getting blown out.

    Too true!
The definition of a boat "a hole in the water that you throw money into".
Oh wait, the definition of a BGE, "a hole in your back deck that you throw money into".
Nowhere near the same amounts, thankfully.

So do you captain? Mate? Or are you recreational like me?   Ever go for tiles?   They are my goal this year.  As for marlin - I do not need them. They are just a side catch for us as we never have out a marlin spread - only tuna. But we often hook up with a white on the close lines or a blue on the way way wayyyy wayyyyyy back.

Actually just recreational.......used to mate years ago.....only fun thing for me has always been rigging the baits, tending the spread, and orchestrating the dance when there are multiple hookups.......a real effective bait for us way way back is a blue/white islander in front of a rigged horse ballyhoo.......big blue fins love em......or a rigged mackerel sewed up all pretty........don't fish way offshore anymore......just too expensive and at 68 the recovery period is too long......lol.......but I have loved it for a lot of years.....tile fishing is a big deal........way offshore, very deep, and really heavy tackle, often international 80's sometimes with electric wind.......nothing better to eat than a golden tilefish......regular tiles aren't too shabby either..........maybe fuel prices will get reasonable in the future......then we could start up again.....not

Absolutely.  I do not want to think about what it would have cost to have both boats come out and get us.  But man, those guys know what they are doing.  Backed us into the last slip on the dock (not the end of the dock) on the first try with a decent side wind.  They know their stuff that is for sure.    Well worth the 275/ yr membership. At least that is what I think it is.
