Lump Charcoal

When I purchased my egg, it came with a couple bags of big green egg brand lump charcoal. Subsequently, I purchased a bag of Stubbs Brand lump charcoal from Costco. It seems to be taking a "lot longer" to get my temperature up to my desired level. Does the brand of lump charcoal make the difference?

Tons of Lump threads here, but in a nutshell, Temp issues would be tied to airflow, not brand. make sure fire box and grate holes are clear...I remove the guts before every long cook to get behind the fire box

I had the same issue when I first got my egg. The charcoal breaks down into small pieces and dust and clogs all the air holes and prevents air from getting to the upper part of the firebox. Need to clean out all the small pieces and the dust. I find that stirring the leftovers helps push a lot of the old junk down through the grate.

You our can also buy grates with larger holes that don't plug as easily.

Could be an airflow problem. Check the firebox and the holes, make sure they are clear. I would also recommend a Hi Que fire grate or something similar.

As far as lump, look at Naked Whiz for some reviews, many people like Rockwood here or Ozark Oak (which may or may not be discontinued). Royal Oak makes the Big Green Egg Charcoal. It comes in red bags, and is frequently sold at Walmart (by me anyway), and is about half the price of the Big Green Egg brand - but is the same stuff.

+1 @ads75; for getting to temp, you can't beat the high cue grate. They are, and will always be, on both my large and mini.

Thanks @ads75 and @jaydub58 I ordered and used my high cue grate last night. My temp jumped up to 500 degrees in less than 2 beers. The steaks grilled up perfectly. Ready for some pizza tonight. The high que great was the answer to my problem.

Agree, but for clarification, is it based on American pints, British pints or EU metric bottles???

Two 16oz. American Bud Light. Lol. Change of plans on pizza. My wife wants burgers. Just fired up the egg and making some Angus Beef patties. Still impressed with the High Que.
