Hey y'all!
I'm a brand new egger from Alabama.  I'm an emergency room / trauma nurse and I'm back in grad school to become an acute care nurse practitioner.  I've loved grilling since I was younger.  I guess I've just kind of had a knack for it.
I've been lusting over an Egg for a while but was just never really able to pull the trigger.  AC / heat goes out, need new tires, grad school....

Anyway,  my two uncles are very Egg savvy and I have enjoyed their feasts for many, many years.  My parents gave me some money for Christmas and said that it was time for me to have my own.  I was ready, finally, to get my LBGE!!!  Did my shopping and found a pretty good deal on a new one but decided to post on FB on a whim that I was looking for a gently used Egg.  Within 30 minutes a friend of mine offered to sell me her Egg for $450 with a nest and two little accessories.  She had only used it 7-8 times.  I was stoked!!

I have just made some wings and some cedar plank salmon this past weekend.  I felt pretty good about my cooks and learned a lot in just those two adventures.  While it wasn't huge success, it wasn't a total failure either.  I'm ready to fire it up again this weekend and see what kind of trouble I can get into.

Since I saved a few bucks with the used Egg, I'll be able to get a table and a few Eggessories I've had my eye on.  I decided to wait on a table for now.  I have a great covered patio outside with a TV and some furniture and may want just a buffet-type table and not one just for my Egg so I can use it for other entertaining.  I'm also left handed so most of the tables I've seen are more righty friendly.  I'll probably have something built later but I'm ok with the nest for now.

I'm excited to learn to use this thing.  I'm not afraid to fail and know there is a learning curve to this gadget.  I'm very open to tips, tricks, ideas and critique!
Also looking forward to reading and learn from y'all on this forum.

Welcome to the forum Meredith! Good call to wait on the table. You may decide you don't really need one. If you don't have one, a Thermapen and a digital thermometer are great accessories.

Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

Welcome.  And as a fellow lefty I too have noticed most tables are set up opposite of my needs.  One day we will have had enough and revolt.  I already have the makers of spiral notebooks in my crosshairs.

Ah, another left-handed trauma nurse. I don't do the trauma thing anymore, but it was exclusively trauma for me when I did. Did you specialize in anything? I was in Neurotrauma. What level Trauma Center?

No specialty really. I'm in a Level 1 trauma center so we see it all. I've gotten a few gun shot wounds d/t hunting related accidents this time of year. We've seen a few ugly falls lately too. We run traumas a little differently than some other trauma nurses I've spoken with. We have daily roles and have to earn our way to the "trauma team" and from there even have our strengths in the room. I prefer to either be the procedure or infusing RN. All that is on...The LEFT side of the pt! Go figure.

I found when i was new the easiest way for me to get comfortable with the egg was to compile an egg journal with meat times, temps, etc. I fly by the wire now, but it gave me a good foundation.

I worked at Shock Trauma in Baltimore. That sounds like our Trauma Resuscitation Unit(Trauma "ER"). I couldn't tell you how many GSW, MVC, motorcycle crash, spinal cord injury, falls, stabbings, assaults ped struck and other conditions of human stupidity I saw. I only stopped because I was the only guy on the unit and didn't want back problems before I was 30. I miss feeling the medevac shake the entire building.

a That's a really good idea. I will definitely do this. I need an app for that so I can take pics and write!
