<p />Well I managed to finish my new table (thanks to Hasenfeffer for the great tips) with only a few minor errors. As stated earlier on another subject on tables, the hinge caused me to have to lift the egg 2 1/2" off the table due them rubbing when opening the lid. However, many of you have stated you have little or no woodworking abilities. Well, I am one of them. It took me 3 days to complete but am very proud of it. Yes it is made of PT pine and I have no worries of causing harm to me or my family. My boys have tables made of PT landscape timbers in both their rooms. I used a redwood stain sealer on it and as I type am cooking 2 sirloin tip roasts on the egg. Man somebody stop me. I am use to grilling out 3-4 times a week as it is but this thing has created a monster. Thanks again for everyones input on making tables and keep the awesome recipes coming.[p]I hope the link works!Comments

SouthTex,[p]Congrats on getting the table done. You're a step ahead of me. I'm still hemming and hawing on what would to use. Hardwood where I live is very expensive, so I was going to go the PT route. But then I wondered, what if I just used regular lumber, and stained it and put some polyurethane on it? Chemical-wise, do you guys think this would be better or worse than using PT wood. Further, do you think this method would last in the exposed elements (hot summers, cold winters)? Looking forward to your thoughts, and good work ST.[p] Beefer

Beefer,
you have to consider what PT is buying you.[p]this isn't in contact with damp soil, it's not exposed to insect attack, etc.[p]i wouldn't be panicked about PT, but it doesn't offer anything better than good wood, finished well. it's a cheap wood, very wet, prone to twisting etc.[p]a concern would be the chemicals in proximity to food (this from a guy with a rutland gasket, by the way), but honestly, my biggest reason not to use it would be, what is the benefit? what does it buy you?[p]a redwood table, cedar, would be nicer looking and as likely to last. even an untreated pine table would not be in any more danger of rotting, etc.[p]it's like undercoating for your car, no value added. except in this case, there's added risk with the exposure to chemicals.[p]PT is an over-sold 'benefit' in the construction industry. stike,
Well you know what they say. Every thing is bigger in Texas.[p]

Larger diameter castors will roll MUCH better if you move the table much.[p]Toy Man

SouthTex,[p]Nice job, did you get that idea from someone else or was it original?[p]Mike

SouthTex,

Nice Job!

wfd146,[p]Have to give all the credit to Hasenfeffer. Did change from 2x4 to 4x4 legs. Plan on putting a round dowel betweeen the 2 handles and then begin decorating,ie. towel rack, bottle openers etc.
-
SouthTex,
That's a fine looking table, especially for someone who claims to have little woodworking ability! The extension is very unique and gives you good working space on both sides of the egg. Very well done.......
-
SouthTex,
Don't be sending any credit my way, you did the work - Nice job buddy! You thought way ahead...now that you've got a stretch limo for your egg you can add a couple more to it down the road. [p]I've thought about the dowel between the handles myself but never got around to actually doing it, LOL. Again, nice job! Now you can start posting pics of your cooks.

SouthTex,[p]Nice table![p]Darren...where are you in South Texas?[p]Houston area here....[p]Evans
I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!! -
Chubby,[p]Everybody's talking about SouthTex's new table, but I can't see it. Am I the only one that can't?[p]Dos "Is something wrong with my eyes" Huevos

Chubby,[p]I'm in Victoria.

SouthTex,[p]Hey! My last name's the same as yours and it's spelled the same too. that's not all that common. You got any kinfolk in the midwest?
-
Dos Huevos,[p]Not that I know of.
-
SouthTex, nice table. Send it off to the Whiz for his table gallery.
-
SouthTex,
I like it a lot. It's as big as Texas, and when you are cooking, you can't have too much work space. Nice looking piece o' work.[p]How about some beefier wheels though??
Cheers!
Chris
