Hickory would probably be best, but I think apple would do just fine.Southern California

Mesquite is a little strong, but it's good on all meats...

Do you have time this evening or tomorrow to go get some oak chunks?

Possibly could get something, Walmart is my only option here so not sure what they would have available.

I use hickory and cherry as a combo on most meat and it works pretty goodBe WellKnoxville TN

No Lowes or HD? They both carry assorted wood chunks. Never seen oak though. Cherry, Apple, Mesquite, Hickory. Cherry or apple would probably be good for your cook.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

In Georgia we have Publix... They carry the western brand oak chunks. I honestly think you'll be fine any way you go. Sounds like a good cook coming up at your place!

+1 on pecan. I have used it on everything, and it always works well. It is similar to oak, but a bit more mild.Transplanted from Austin, Texas to Medina, Ohio

I really like pecan too, but I would compare it to a milder hickory instead of a milder oak. Just my opinion though.

have you used it with chicken or turkey? I usually just use lump alone . the wife doesn't like too much smoke flavor, but pecan works great with ribs and butt. and tenderloin.

@stevesails, I have used it on chicken numerous times, but not turkey. It turned out great. I'm assuming it would be just fine on turkey. With any wood, though, I go really light with chicken.Transplanted from Austin, Texas to Medina, Ohio

I'm a big fan of both hickory and cherry. I've heard pecan is nice as well for both, but I haven't tried that yet.
It's all good!Pittsburgh, PA - 1 LBGE -
I'd say Oak, Pecan, hickory, cherry in that order for both pork and beef.Dunedin, FL
