Better grill marks.
Plus, it's better for searing. Cast iron has a wider surface area than the round and narrow steel rack.

Congrats on the LBGE and welome to the zoo. Warning, it is addicting. For a first low and slow I'd do a pork butt. Very forgiving cook if you don't stay within your target temps. See the below discussion for all types of options on temp. Good luck and post pics or it didn't happen.

Pork butt would be a great first cook. Here is mine from 5/12 a day after the egg was delivered.

I bought the BGE cast iron for my large when i bought my egg. Used it for steaks and chops, but now i am using it less and less since i have been cooking steaks and chops direct at gasket level.
Welcome to the funny farm. Know right off the bat, that there are many ways to cook on the egg and get the same results. Keep that in mind when reading this forum, it helps to save your sanity!

Welcome!
A fatty is dead simple. Unwrap a roll of Jimmy Dean sausage and smoke it. After that the world is your oyster - try them rubbed and/or stuffed with all kinds of things. Pork butts are also easy to do and yield a lot of pulked pork if you have hungry mouths to feed.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -
@caliking said to "smoke a fatty"! Wow those were the days. B-)

+1 on all the folks that suggested pork butt as a first cook. Very forgiving. Great for learning. My best advice is before any cook, get on here and read tips, hints, failures of all the people on here that have been doing it a long time. I have only had my egg since January but almost every cook I have done has come out close to exactly how I wanted thanks to the knowledge gained from this forum. Good luck and welcome aboard!
