the best glue for a nomex gasket

This is my first post here so hello all you eggmen and eggwomen from Halifax Nova Scotia. I just got my large BGE about 3 weeks ago and just love the results of everything I have cooked so far including planked salmon, drunken chicken, ground chicken burgers, 12hr. pulled pork and the best pizza I have ever eaten. My last cooking project was the pizza which I cooked using the plate setter and a pizza stone at 600 deg.F. Just as I was taking the pizza of the egg I noticed that my gasket was badly charred and falling off of the top lid on the back quarter of the egg. After doing some research here and other sites I decided to get a nomex gasket from the Smokin guitar player rather than replace the felt with more felt. On his site he recommends using 3M super 77 glue but I was thinking the 3M super 90 might hold better because I don't want to stop cooking pizzas because the are just too good. Any advice that you more experienced eggheads could offer would be greatly appriciated. Terry

    I used the 3M Super 77 glue on my Nomex gasket. It has been in place for 2 1/2-3 years now and I have not had a problem yet. I have done many high temp cooks since then. I would go with the Super 77 if I had to do it again.

    The stuff that came with my nomex gasket lasted less than a month. No regrets with 3M Super 77

  • I've also used 3M 77 with great success (actually found it much easier to apply the gasket with this rather than lay down a gasket with a self-adhesive back). I believe it's also certified food-safe (I don't have the can in front of me but I remember reading that), which a lot of adhesives are not.

    I still recommend NOT eating the adhesive.  :D

     

    Easy way to apply Super 77 is to spray a bunch if it into a disposable cup and then brush it on the surface of the egg.  Then lay down your gasket.  Worked like a champ for me.

    The green egg also recommends using high temp caulking like you use for masanory and kilns. I used permatex coper with the Nomex before and it work excellent. The only issues is the nomex still burns at high temp so yesterday I went with Rutland gasket and permatex coper for the adhesive. Have lots of friends using rutland and they love it and say its a lot more durable and heat resistance. The website nakedwiz has lost of info on it. I am also a Halifax egghead! You can get the rutland gasket at rona in Bayers lake for $11 and the permatex coper at canadian tire for $6.99

  • I use Permatex Copper for Nomex and Rutland gaskets.  Works great!.  I scrapped off the old original crappy gasket and residue with a razor blade scrapper.  Sanded the surface with 220 grit paper and then used Acetone (Big Box Paint Aisle kind, not fingernail stuff). Let it dry then apply a medium even coat all the way around and press your gasket into it.  Let it dry before putting the top and bottom together or they may stick.

    I used the same method has smoking Stogies but used 99%rubing alcohol instead of acetone! Less toxic! I used waxed paper in between the lid and bottom and it didn't stick together. All the site was recommending wax paper.
