Bottom of the bag dump for a quick burger cook. A lot more sparks than I've ever seen with Rockwood. It was actually kind of cool to watch every time I opened the dome.

Every now and again I get a bag that seems to spark more than others.Louisville, GA - 2 Large BGE's

Just finished a bag like that myself. First one like that with Rockwood for me.L x2, M, S, Mini and a Blackstone 36. She says I have enough now....eggAddict from MN!

I get sparks when I light with a torch, but I haven't seen that. Interesting. I've only burned 100# so maybe my day's coming.

@johnkitchens sorry about that. Must have pushed the button by mistake. Your response was definitely on topic. I have hopefully taken it back.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA

It happens. I've gone through well over 30 bags this year. I would say 10% of my cooks have been sparky. Most upon lighting. I'll put rockwood up against any as far as quality of cook start to finish goes. Ozark Oak is right in there too. 1A and 1B in my book.

I just ordered a mix of 100 pounds of Rockwood and Ozark Oak from Firecraft. Stocking up for winter.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA

If I use a plug in lighter to light my coals, I normally don't have any sparking problem with Rockwood. However, if I light the lump with a mepps torch, I always have safety goggles and a long sleeve shirt on....no joke! Great lump, though! From the NE Georgia Mountains! Me, SWMBO, and two spoiled ass Springers!

I've read that the sparking is caused by moisture in the lump. I've noticed that when relighting used lump that there's virtually no sparking, which would give credit to the theory.Slumming it in Aiken, SC.

I found that if I used lump from an opened bag, stored outside, the lump sparked more on lighting. Which brand didn't make that much of a difference. Fresh bags from the garage don't spark nearly enough. I chalked it up to Houston's humidity.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.
