Past or Present Culinary Heroes. Who's Yours?
I have been grilling since I was a kid. My folks had a gasser and when my Mom wanted something grilled, I was the guy. I only cooked standard backyard stuff, but it was usually edible. I became interested in cooking more than backyard fare in college watching this weird guy on PBS. That guy was the Frugal Gourmet. I still have his cookbooks.
The old cookbook thread reminded me of them and my old culinary hero. I wouldn't say he was the greatest chef because I've cooked a recipe or two from those books that I think were clinkers. But my interest was sparked and for me, that's enough to call him my culinary hero.

Mr. Flintstone, I hope this doesn't ruin your childhood. The Frugal Gourmet was huge in my early adulthood too, I had his first three or four books, and watched him religiously (no pun intended) on Saturday mornings. He started out as a preacher, and did a thesis on food in the family, which is how he came to the cooking world. Unfortunately, he was also a child molester, and that's what ended his career.I won't ever call him my culinary "hero". But I gotta say he was my culinary "gateway".Hero? Probably more "Influences": Alton here too, Joyce Chen, James Beard, and a few others. Adam Perry Lang and Bobby Flay more recently._____________

I honestly have to say that I got no cooking heros. My level of cooking is mediocre at best and that has been brought up from ghetto since I started reading and interacting here. Every bad ass cook makes me try harder So I guess y'all are my heros. There are a few things that I try to replicate from my paternal grandmother and getting close.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Anthony Bourdain. he's never written a cookbook or even posted a recipe that i know of but his attitude about food around the globe is right in my wheelhouse.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

Fair enough. I guess it would have been more accurate to say that I have never searched or seen any of his recipes- I just love his writing and take on food and chef culture in general.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX -

I used to love watching rick bayless on pbs. That segued me into Steven raichlen who would be my outdoor cooking inspiration. Both guys were very process oriented and used techniques that could be adapted to many recipies. Today, I like centex am a Bourdain fan, the way he educates the cultural influences of food throughout the world is enough for me to open my mind and try different things. Plus he drinks, swears and smokes, my kind of dude.

Hey @Botch - Ok, hero may not be the right word and influence might be a better choice.
I remember he got in trouble for something and lost his show. Once he lost his show the hub bub died quickly. According to the all-knowing internet, there was no trial, just a settlement from his insurance company.
I am not an attorney, but I spend a lot of time at work arguing and advocating cases and viewpoints. In my experience, a settlement does not necessarily determine truth. Many times it is just an expediency.
But the allegations make him a controversial character and perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned him. Anyone who is upset about my mentioning him, you have my apology.Flint, Michigan -

My Grandfather! While growing up he always cooked, whether it was something quick or thanksgiving dinner it was awesome. His sweet potato soufflé, chicken fettucine Alfredo, brussel sprouts and meatloaf are my favorites. Look forward to them all the time. Never does much grilling other than the occasional steak or hamburgers, but a beast in the kitchen.Other than him, Alton Brown has some pretty good stuff.Blake.The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves!

I cut my teeth watching the series Great Chef's Great Cities. It also included Great Chef's of the World, and then Great Chef's of certain cities. I would watch them make dishes I was repulsed by like terrines, aspic, pate, etc and yet I could not look away.Looking back, some of the chef's were SO young. Mark Miller, Bobby Flay, Emeril Lagasse, Hubert Keller, Michel Richard just to name a few inspired me at the young age of eleven or twelve to trail blaze and create wonderful dishes. As a kid, cooking in the home kitchen, I learned the fundamentals like mother sauces, mirepoix, mise-en-place, deglazing, and much more.To this day, when I really get in the cooking zone, I can hear the music from Charlie Byrd trio playing in my head as I prep. Here is a quick one from Bobby Flay I found on youtube. Nothing too fancy, but also…. nothing too fancy. Just SOLID cooking. Gosh I wish some of you would take the time to check out how some of these chefs were cooking in the early 1980s.Great Chefs- If you have the means, I highly suggest picking some up. They are so choice!Cheers-Proud resident of Missoula, MThttps://www.facebook.com/GrillingMontanahttp://grillingmontana.com

Most of the time I have to do a web search when somebody mentions a famous culinary expert. I never really got into the cooking shows/chefs thing. In fact, never really gave cooking much thought until I got my BGE. We've always been fast food junkies. If we wanted something special, we'd go to one of the chain restaurants like red lobster or Texas Roadhouse.
Since joining the forum, my mind has been opened to a whole new world. I can honestly say the greatest influence on me has been the members of the forum.Steven
