Tel Tru Thermometers (AKA "How long is your stem")

I replaced the BGE Thermometer that came with my medium egg with a Tel Tru with a 5 inch stem - today, when I put the turkey on the stem penetrated the bird and bent the stem when I closed the top. Tel Tru offers thermometers with 2 1/2 inch stems and I'm thinking about ordering the one with the shorter stem. The 5 inch also causes problems with large pork shoulders and sometimes ribs.
Does anyone have any experience with the 2 1/2 inch stems and anything good or bad to say?
Thanks.

Run the therm stem through a wine bottle cork before inserting into the dome, omit the clip. If it touches the shoulder, turkey or what have you it should pop up.canuckland

I think the standard stems are around 2.5 inches, so the shorter one should be fine.

Correction - the corks from bottles of any number of Belgian beers also work.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

The Cen-Tex Smoker said:where does one find one of these 'wine corks" you speak of?Seems there is a real problem getting cork good enough to use for wine, the amount of "corked" wine has almost doubled over the past 10 years. Assumed it was due to the "OSB" corks or just crap cork. Synthetic also has the advantage you can store the bottle standing up.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
