My first bear chicken on the BGE

OK I have cooked bear chicken before on the old BBQ, on a bear stand but drippings did keep fire going, I know this is a different way but does it matter if you cook it upright direct or upright over plate setter indirect over drip pan. I think I got the heat setting @ 350. The old way was to lite briquettes, set on can and watch thermometer to 180? I want the best way to prove to myself that I can do a better job on the BGE

  • I'll bite. What is a "bear chicken"?
  • I think he means beer.

Beer can chicken, or more correctly chicken cooked on a vertical roasting rack can be quite good. This link shows why you should not use a beer can:

Since purchasing an egg, spatchcocking provides much better results. Basically cut the back bone out and flatten the bird, cavity side down. For first attempt, cook indirect at 400 over a raised drip pan - there will be drippings and you do not want the drippings to hit the hot lump. Kinda a set it and forget it cook.
Raised direct, no drip pan will allow the drippings to hit the lump, but does take a touch more experience to get the best results, IMHO. I've found I must pay more attention to a direct cook.

Three different times rules out a typo but nice try.  Dont worry though cause its all about the chicken being good and getting better.

When cooking indirect with a platesetter or heat barrier if some kind the dome will be hotter than the grid for longer than it takes to cook a chciken, This is how I do it indirect image

If direct put it on the traditional way with athe smallest drip pan you can.
