Replacing gasket without removing lid??

Is there any reason, other than cramped working space, to remove the lid when replacing the lower gasket? I removed the old one and replaced it with Permatex but I think I squashed too thin when I closed the lid while the Permatex was curing. Want to install a Rutland using Permatex as the adhesive. My partner has small hands and good hand dexterity so workspace shouldn't be a problem. Can I just apply the Permatex/Rutland, close the lid and loosen the upper band and readjust it to compensate for the thicker gasket? Any help greatly appreciated ... Great afternoon to work outside. Yes, I did run a search but found little about leaving the lid on. Thanks

Ive done it with the lid on, in my case it was a old melted gasket so scraping it off in the cramped workspace was not fun.
Either way I dont think it matters but its easier to do with it off, and taking of the lid is not real difficult if you have the proper tools. -
I also need to replace a lower gasket and hope you will post the outcome of your repair project. Thanx!~~

realignment when you are done will probably require you to losen the bands anyway. I always wondered why not just remove the hinge instead of the bands personally, it can be done the way it's set up...personally I haven't have a gasket in 2 years and don't know the difference.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241

I never realigned the two halves when I went from the original gaskets to the single Permatex gasket. (Possibly the reason I'm replacing it now)... Passed the dollar bill test but may have allowed hot gas to erode the gasket. Will I need to loosen both bands to get things in correct alignment?
