Unknown Substance Burning In Egg!!!

Hello eggheads, I came home to cook something, filled the egg with fresh lump, lit it and "WHAM". Something started burning and smoking and putting off a real bad smell. It"s been 30min. and still burning and smelling bad. So what i did is closed the lid, opened all cannons(vents), and see if it will get hot enough to burn it away.
Only concern that I have is that the smell will be on the egg when I put the food on and mess up my food. And I cannot afford that to happen. So I"m comming to my fellow egghead crew for any comments or suggestions please.
And as always, Thankyou in advance for your help. Don"t know what I would do without you guys and gals..Peace...

Do you have a sagging gasket overlapping on the inside of the Egg?

Break it down and clean out pulling out the fire ring. Just to make sure you didn't have any unwanted guests.

It"s already lit and over 400deg.... Can"t break it down now..

zahndok may have a point here. An unwanted guest could also be in the form of spme material in teh lump that may be foreign. I frequently find rocks and chunks of concrete etc in my lump. Could be a tar ball or something more organic in nature like a small beastie. Either way, if you've opened the vents and put the coal to her, it's probably too late to do much other than wait and see what happens. A high temp burn should remove most of the odor if one remains. Let us know what the outcome of this incident is. I'm very curious now.

I have had a similar experience. I did not do a high temp burn to clean the egg for awhile. I lit the coals and off she went. I let it get up to 600-700 deg and burn off. It smelled pretty nasty. After it cooled down, next day, I scrubbed down all components with crumpled aluminum foil. Lots of white ash from all the gunk but now, good as new.. Now I do high temp clean ing burns on a regular basis and have not had the problem again.
So, I fyou haven't done a high temp burn recently, this could be the problem.

I'm retired and all the Kids are gone with their own families. So, hang in there, good things come to those who wait and have patience. -
It"s now at 650deg. strong and no smoke, How about that?
