Hot table!
Lit
Posts: 9,053
So about 1:30 AM last night my Fiancee looked out the window and asked why the smoker was still going. My first question was how can you tell it is still going (I finished the pizza and closed all the vents around 10:30)? When I got to the back door my eggs were cooking. Anyone ever see this before? The Cobb pizza came out good by the way. Smoked avocado, roasted tomato and cilantro sauce with smoked BBQ chicken, bacon, sauteed onions with garlic, and Swiss cheese with crumbled blue cheese on top.

WOW!

Wow, pretty lucky. Any longer and perhaps the eggs could have toppled.Dave San Jose, CA The Duke of Loney

Is the table the only fatality?
Yes, there have been many discussions about the gap around the egg in tables. Also about having fire brick underneath the egg, rather than just a concrete paver. Its very important to have enough air gap so that your table doesnt heat up enough to do just what yours did.
It looks like you can salvage the bottom half of the table at least. -
Yeah, blows. Atleast the eggs survived and the table can be fixed. Gonna be doing ribs at knee high level today.
-
The gap on the table was small but I think the biggest issue was cooking with the plate setter at higher temps (550 degree range). I am guessing it made the outsides of the egg get hotter than normal due to its shape. I have used this table for awhile and have had the egg to 1000 degrees before with no issues. The only difference is this time the plate setter was inside. The table should be pretty easy to fix and will have a bigger gap this time for sure.

Sorry to see the table damage...but the pizza looks good! Definitely looks like too small of a gap between the Egg and table, plus like someone else said...use the feet even if on a paver.
That's why mine are on the feet on the pavers and have plently of air space...
Have a GREAT day!

Nice setup! Will do a couple things different when I fix the table including a bigger gap. At this point I just feel lucky the table didn't collapse.
-
That's what happens when you have an gas'r close to the eggs.
Close call, glad you caught it before the table gave way.
Do you think you had a spark land on the table?
GG -
looks like a uniform burn around the gap between table and egg at the front of the egg.
-
Looks like a 1/4" or less gap. :pinch:
-
and could have been touching, too. if shifted off center
-
I noticed that too, also one can see some burn marks on the left rear behind the egg.
I wonder if it was flaming or just a char from the heat.

What's the flash point of pine or cedar? :ermm:
-
dunno.
paper is fahrenheit 451 (ray bradbury... hahaha) -
at left it has to be from flame. i don't think char could crawl down the gap between two boards?
-
How stuff works, says 572* Fahrenheit
-
After I made this last post I looked at the picture again and noticed the char on the far left of the table as well as what looks like burnt wood on the ground all around the table.
-
It was flames. The gap on the table was small but I have been using the table for awhile and have cooked many times at much higher temps. It was under 500 degrees when I closed the vents and there were no embers. I had the plate setter in legs up and I really think that forced more heat to the sides. My next table will have a much bigger gap.
-
Sure sorry to see this but glad you caught it and the eggs any you guys are OK.

An ember must of rolled out from the lower intake of the small egg and started the table burning. What a mess. To bad you did not catch it sooner. Looks like a new table is in the plans.
Nice pizza, by the way. -
I noticed that the CI top as opposed to the ceramic top. I always close mine off with the ceramic top. does that make any difference?
