Free Range BBQ had almost our full contingent up in Bel Air MD this weekend at the bel air bbq bash. ..me, the virginian, uncondundrum and a starring role by MR earl himself! (only one we were missing was "bill" and the spawn - she hates bel air) 60 teams competing in beautiful weather ....we took a 3rd in chicken, a 5th in ribs, 7th in pork and 21st in brisket, again out of 60 teams. .. chicken and brisket were cooked in the BGEs (ribs and pork were cooked in brett's guru tall boy). ...ended up 3rd overall. ...this competition was as close they come. ..top four teams were separated by less than 2 total points with 2nd, 3rd and 4th only 2 100th points apart each (bbq bob and hatch of the guru team were in 4th only 2 100ths behind us!!). .. and tuffy stone took GC. .. . so we had a great time, eggs performed like champs. .. .looking forward to new holland in 2 weeks. ..

Congratulations Max, but 21st. in brisket is not fair to you.....were you wearing your pijama trousers???
-
Ha Beli, that's his 'dress up' clothes. His pajamas are even more wild.
By the way, I read where the drug cartels shut down Monterrey yesterday. Barricaded all roads, shot some people, robbed some people and made a real mess of things.
I sure hope you are a long ways away from all those problems. I know I would be.

you know, i forgot to put them on!! had them in the car, maybe that was my bad luck, LOL .. ..
our brisket was very good, but slightly overdone, too tender.. ..and we were afraid that when the judges went to pull it out of the box, tht the slices might break apart in their hand. ..thats a "no-no" in kcbs judging ..certainly enough to have cost us that point or two that made the difference between 1st and 3rd overall ... our burnt ends were 'dead-on' though. ..but in competition this close, its the little things that make the big difference. .. -
Congratulations Max! Impressive wins and rankings!
Glad you and the gang had a great time and your cooking talent really shined at this event. :cheer: -
thanks clay.. ..it was one of those days when we felt like things came together pretty well and we gave the judges 'something to think about'. . .and there are just so many good teams out there now, you take nothing for granted. ..we were very greatful for our calls.. ..

Great job Max, sounds like it was a tough field...Congrats.
-
thanks wess. . .the fields get tougher all the time....everyone out there can cook up a storm...and you know when you are in a line right next to the guru guys, the dizzy piggers, and leann whippen, its as good as it gets!!

TKS for caring Leroy, we are about 20 min. drive from MTY, but as you can imagine here noone can be too secure I definitely take all measures at my disposal to avoid such conflicts.

That's it Max, they didn't recognize you without the pants  ...I love a tender brisket, but again the judges have their own rules.....

Hey Max, Thanks for posting. I know your cooks were awesome and to think you were rubbing elbows with some personalities. ya-zoo ya-zoo Keep up the good work. Tim
-
thanks tim. ...yeah, its always an honor to cook next to folks you see on tv like tuffy or leanne, or other legends on the bbq circuit. ..and it just validates your cooking when you end up higher on the score sheets either in an individual category or overall than some of them it feels pretty good. .. . even finishing 21st in brisket, i look down the score sheets and see who was behind us and there were some pretty good teams down the list....
-
thanks patti, we had a really good time

Way to go, were you using your egg?Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now).

How long should you cure the felt caset after installation?
-
BBQLover,, you'll get more replies if you start a new thread with your question but to answer you it depends on the adhesive you use. I have rutlands on my eggs with permatex ultra copper and just let it sit overnight then it's ready for low or high temps.
-
we used our eggs for the chicken and brisket. ...we used a bbq-guru tall boy caldera for the ribs and pulled pork. . .
-
Certianly... this is just a case of the "Cream rising to the top!!!
Well deserved...well done!!
Evans
And to think... they did that well...with you there!! :woohoo:I spent most of my money on good bourbon, and bad women...the rest, I just wasted!!
