I have a recipe that calls for ground celery seed and ground bay leaf, neither of which I can find at the grocery store. If I can find the regular (unground) celery seed and bay leaves, what is the best way to ground them?? Thanks!

Ditto fishlessman. I also use a Krups coffee grinder and when done run some uncooked rice thru it and back to coffee.

I also use a coffee grinder, and it works great. However, I dedicated it to spices only after my first cup of cumin coffee.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

A Mr. Coffee coffee grinder works great. You can find them for around $20. It has three grind settings fine, medium, and coarse. A simple trick is to grind rice for cleaning inbetween spices.BrandonQuad Cities

A coffee grinder for spice processing is very handy to have around.
I know of one pitmaster with 5 GCs so far this year who post-seasons his BBQ by using a coffee grinder to finely grind his rub so that he can put it in a salt shaker. This way, if he feels his meat needs a bit more seasoning, he can kick it up without adding the gritty texture from adding rub after the fact.

The bay leaf you can just chop up finely with a knife, or even vrumble in your fingers. If you don't want to buy a grinder (altho there are hand powered ones for about $10, I've got 4), you can fake a mortar and pestle by pressing seed between two table spoons if you only need a little.
