I forgot in my other reply to mention John that the last two photos of mine look compressed like that because I was probably over 100 yards away with a 1500mm lens. That was the only lens I had with me at the time and I had to get far enough away from the Skimmers before I could get a shot of them in the air.

That's unreal, the Lawyers must rake it in left and right trying to figure all the technicalities out. I would think you would have access to his parents names so you could go to court. Good luck getting any form of settlement out of this.

Great photos Jon, The flowers are beautiful.
This is a wild Iris called a Southern Blue Flag that blooms in the swamps in the spring down here.
This one looks a lot like an Iris but actually isn't. It is another swamp dweller known as Canna. Some call it Canna Lilly but it isn't a Lilly either. It is also known as Bandanna-of-the-Everglades.
Flowers always make great subjects to photograph, I look for them when ever the birds aren't cooperating.
Thanks for sharing the photos,

Hey thanks for those links. I learned something about leafhoppers today..... the video was especially interesting how it showed the formation of the white "eyes" on the female..... who'd have thought..... only on the egg forum. :~)

Here are some from up north
-
They are what we always call chicken snakes. The male was about 5 foot and some change and the female bout 4.

Hey JL, I have a hunch what you have are a pair of Black Rat Snakes. The Rat snakes are great to have around, your rodent population will suffer for it. I think the other Rat Snakes are also called Chicken Snakes. Not because they necessarily eat chickens but because they are attracted to barns and stables where the rats are stealing grain and finding good nesting sites. I have found Yellow Rat Snakes about the size of your male. It was big enough and I was young enough I didn't dare pick it up. Since I have moved down here I have found Red Rat Snakes about as large as your female. The Rat Snakes are great climbers, the Red-cockaded Woodpecker, a small rare species found in the southeast nests in live Pine trees and develops an apron of sap around their nest holes. The chemicals in the pine pitch, probably turpentine is a great deterrent to the Rat Snakes that can climb the trees very readily. Nature is so cool!

OH MAN.......... that is not right.. years ago you and dad would have had a talk and it would be taken care of. he might not sit for a month and he would be spending the summer doing anything he needed to to get the $$ to make it right! there has to be a happy medium for raising these kids to respect and care... glad mine are grown...
-
You are right about a grown chicken but they will eat chicks and also the eggs mainly. Grandmother used to put a glass "egg" in the hen nest when one would start killing. The snake would swallow it and of course could not pass it and die. After the snake rotted go and pick up the "egg" and reuse it! Wife hates them but I let them hang around just like you said for the rat and mouse control.
-
That's really interesting about the glass egg. It seems a little rough on the snake but that's life on a farm. I'm sorry your wife hates them, I think that is often learned. I am amazed by them, I can't see keeping them as pets but think they are fascinating animals. A constrictor like a big rat snake is like a work of art and I would love to meet the artist.

Glad you enjoyed it Bruce, we have some fine photographers around here and you never know what is going to turn up. I love Woosdays, the closest thing to rules are that they are on Tuesdays and one Woosday post usually serves all. Photos of any subject are welcome as is anyone who wishes to participate and anyone may start a Woosday post. They really embody the sharing spirit.
Hope we see some of your photos some Woosday soon, the more participants the better.
