I'd love to visit an old bbq joint when I'm in Austin for the Texas eggfest. Just throwing it out there. Any come to mind?
Thanks!

The fest will most likely be the best..but I'm sure the locals will offer some respectable grub..
  • There is a bbq place featured several times on travel channel called Salt Lick.....it looked pretty interesting.

Funny, my niece just found me on facebook. She is attending Texas Tech in Lubbock. I was going to invite her and her friends. Doubt she is focused on the bbq joints though.
    Thanks Dan!

Molly there are several legendary ones within 50 miles of Austin. Luling, Lockhart, Lexington, Giddings and the Salt Lick in Austin are a few that we have tried and were good. Happy to fill you in at OK over a cold one.

We like Cooper's in Llano. Which is a blast. Point to the meat in the pit that you want - love it!

Kreuz in Lockhart is also good.

Haven't been to the Salt Lick (except for several of the original Texas Food and Wine Fests, which used to be held on the grounds) but I've heard it's good.

They've opened a couple other Salt Licks, but you have to go to the original in Driftwood. We'd drive down there all the way from Round Rock. It is located in a dry county so you can bring a cooler with beverages of your own choice. They only accept cash, but there is an ATM right next to the register. There is a Salt Lick in the airport, the food is very similar but you don't get the atmosphere (and no all you can eat plates).

There is always Rudy's A lot of people like it, but it is a little too peppery for me.

Pok-e-Jo's is good in a pinch, I really like their sausage. Smokey Mo's is also good in a pinch, plus both were close to our house. They aren't old timey BBQ joints though.

We always avoided downtown so we never tried Stubb's and Ironworks. If you go to Kruez in Lockhart, get there early because they do run out of brisket.

Others have mentioned Lockhart. It is the Mecca of BBQ. I know a guy that came all the way from Germany just to eat BBQ at Kruez Market. There are several in town, including Smitty's, which is also famous.

Very good ones named already. I like the beefribs at the Iron Works downtown.
Hoss I do not remember seeing the OLD SAN FRANSISCO steakhouse in years.
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

  • Lockhart is great. Those two places are part of a family feud, and both are very good for brisket and sausage. Kreuz's was the only one there forever, and then the grandkids started a feud and Smitty's was created.

Just remember that Texas BBQ is a bit different partially because of the mesquite wood. Brisket and sausage are Texas' strongest meats, and sauce is not really a focus. I would recommend Lockhart of the one's listed. It is a small town BBQ that people travel miles to go to. It also is probably the most "authentic of true Texas BBQ".

Rudys' is another, and it too has been on TV, but Lockhart's places are better. http://rudys.com

Don't forget to try the Mexican food in Texas, it is fantastic! A unique one in a fun part of town is El Arroyo.
  • Check out the link below. A good friend of mine lives in Austin and blogs about Texas BBQ. Some great info/pics of BBQ around Austin

I sent my nephew, who lives in Austin, an email. Here is his reply:

    High-End: Lamberts
    Experience: the Salt Lick
    Famous Old School: Iron Works
    Everyday: PokeJoes

Best of all time: Kreutz's in Lockhart!!!

They closed Old San Francisco 2 or 3 years ago, auctioned everything off (even the swing).

At Kreutz they don't even offer sauce! Don't know about Smitty's as I've never been there.

I am going to echo what a lot of people have already said. I have been to Salt Lick on the southwest side of Austin and really enjoyed the food and the ambience. On a Saturday night in the summer be prepared to wait an hour for a table. There are frequently 100 to 200 people waiting outside on the patio, but most don't seem to mind if the weather is nice and especially if they have BYOB.

As a Texan and a lover of BBQ I am almost ashamed to admit that I have not been to any of the joints in Lockhart 30 miles south of Austin. I probably ought to fix that in a few weeks. As has been said above they are the mecca of Texas Barbecue. There are three, Kreuz (pronounced Krites), Smitty's and Blacks. Lot's of controversy over which is better. Some of it is a soap opera like family fued - the owner of Kreuz left the BBQ business to his son, and the building to his daughter. Son thought sister was charging him to much rent money and moved Kreuz down the street to a new building. Sister re-opened the building as Smitty's Barbecue. There are also great places in many of the small towns around Austin such as Elgin, Taylor, Luling, etc.

My Dad likes Kreuz, yep no BBQ sauce, the brisket is so good the meat stands on it's own and you don't need it.

Some of the best BBQ in Texas is sold from Mom and Pop road side stands. They are slowly disappearing, though. And if you're driving down the road and see a tamale stand, don't pass it by. ;)

I forgot one, County Line is also pretty good. They also have AYCE BBQ plates too!
  • IMO, County Line is not very good.

Agreed. County Line was where we took out of town visitors that wouldn't have understood ordering at the counter and being served on butcher paper. Or sitting at a picnic table.

I did like their wheat bread, though ;)

  • Narrowed my list down to try one of the Lockhart joints, Ruby's in Downtown Austin, or possibly one in Taylor.
Does anyone know if Mikesha's in Taylor is still open for business?
    Thanks B)
