Here is one idea. The ceramic grill store will save you some labor.

BGE, Large, Grill Extenders
1 kilo,
2 Go to a hardware store that sells stainless steel bolts that they can cut from a long piece and have them cut you 4 sections of about 6" in length of 1/4" diameter. Buy at least 6 nuts and 3 washers for each bolt.
3 Bolt these to a smaller grid using a washer and two nuts on top of the grid and a washer and two nuts on the bottom of the grid. You may need to adjust the distance of the grid from the top of the bolt but start with about 1" distance. You need two nuts so one will hold the other stationary. Then put two washers and 4 nuts on the bottom of the bolt with enough space to hold the grid at the desired level. With this setup you can put the grid on and take it off easily. Make sure all of the components are stainless.
4 I got this idea off the forum several years ago and it works. Someone posted a picture but I don't have one.

Correct. Myself and many others on the forum have used everything from all thread to carriage bolts. But, if Stainless makes you feel all warm and fuzzy though, use it. -
i made mine from stainless carriage bolts, nuts and washers, carriages were 6" long x 1/4", and i used a replacement stainless charcoal grate from weber. In retrospec the grate was a little too big (18") and if i have the platesetter legs up, the cast iron grate, and i put the top tier on, i cant shut the lid. I use this rack for raised direct chickens and salmon.
I have the grid extender from BGE and it is junk. i've used it twice. -
I would go with 3/8-16 carriage bolts. The way the top of the bolt will sit nicely on the grill. I made mine with 3/8-16x 4 1/2.

From the photo are you using the Plate Setter when you use your set-up? Also what is the length of each Threaded Rod ? Personally I would use 3/8 rod.
I do like your set up. How and when would it be used ?
Thanks.
