I as fixing to buy a Green Egg,but really not sure what size? My main objective is to cook pork shoulders or pork hams, what size would work the best?
I would appreciate any suggestion from the forum.

  • i think the first question is how many in family and how many do you usually cook for........ most will say large, i have large and it is just me and wife, but would not trade it. example of pork loins on large without raised grate.

One question one might ask you is how many people would you cooking for ? Personally I have an XL but the most often reply you would get from here is to go with the Large. I like having the extra space to cook. There are accessories for the EGG that lets you cook on more than on the one grate. There is a store/website, The Ceramic Grill Store, that carries a lot of these and they are good quality-built.

You can't go wrong with getting an EGG.

Buy the large first (first as you will buy more later).
Started with a small (just 2 of us) and went to a large and then mini.
If I had a full do-over would have 2 larges and a mini.
NOTHING wrong with the small, I just do not use it very much anymore.

    Welcome Cooker.
Oh my here we go again.
You will get a lot of great input on this topic, a large is the best all-around size and has the most eggcessories available. All of them are great and If I had the money I would have one of each size. It's just the two of us and we have a LG. Medium and Mini.
I have done 4 shoulders on my LG with an adjustable rig from the Ceramic Grill store.

My vote is get a large to start off as you will probably have more than one soon :woohoo:

You cant go wrong with the Large. Good Luck.
  • No doubt about it, Large. I cook mainly for the wife and myself. Sometimes my Brother and sister-in-law. And rarely, my son and two grandsons. So I can cook for as few as two (one if I wanted to) and as many as 12 on my large. And I also have a 3-tier rack system that would allow me to do even more if I wanted to do it. The large is perfect!

My large suits me just fine. I have cooked 4 slabs of ribs with no trouble...fed eight...
  • We have an XL and there only two of us. But when company is coming and you want to do meat for 6-8 plus baked potatos and maybe roasting ears, it can fill up fast. We may have more room than necessary for daily cooking, but very handy for larger groups.

    This is a pre-recorded message:

I often hear that the large does not have the capacity to cook for a large family.

Let me tell you that is a lot of bull. When my family gets together we are typically 20+. My XL sits there and wishes I would use him.

    So here is my proof:

Please note the amount of sausage on this egg:

6 7-9 pound butts on this egg:

Just for contrast please note the amount of meat on this Lang 60:

I cooked 18 butts on 3 eggs and took up less space.

My XL gets used when I cater and even then it's only used for something that may not physically fit on my large and can't be cut into smaller chunks.

Ohh did I tell you I have 2 small eggs too. You will NOT be disappointed with the Egg, unless you fail to learn how to use it or don't use it. Many of us use it as our primary cooking source year round.
