wood chunks for fuel?

I know that lump charcoal is recommended for the egg, but does any use wood chunks exclusivly, for fuel?
I like heavy woodsmoke and my old cooker used logs only.
Just curious.

You can use all wood as a fuel source but you will generate a huge amount of ash. I also have a wood burning offset smoker, so I know about heavy smoke potential. The Egg is quite capable of giving you all, and more, smoke than you can stand even using lump as the fuel. It just seems to be more concentrated in the Egg. In fact, many people have to decrease the amount of smoking wood they use because it is so effective. So although you CAN use all wood, using lump for fuel is just "much more gooder".

Here's a guess. The kind of airflow that would be needed to keep wood flaming in the Egg would result in a fire that was way too hot for anything but searing. I too like a lot of smoke, and find that 3 big chunks of oak, or 3 large handfuls of chips give a very good strong flavor. I was happy to get a compliment awhile back on the quality of some ribs. The fellow said the smoke flavor was more pungent and sweet than what he had had a week before from another fellows wood fired offset.

I guess excess ash could be an issue on a long cook
