CyberQII ===> CableQII

Yesterday I started a thread regarding my frustration with the practicality of using the PC-based features of the Guru CyberQII:
http://www.greeneggers.net/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&func=view&id=787662&catid=1
My complaint was that in order to use the PC application to control and monitor the Guru you either have to 1)Put a laptop outside by the grill; 2)Run a cable into the house; or 3)Drop another $200 on a decent wireless USB hub.
Today I talked to Ken at Guru and determined my best option is to get a USB to Cat5 converter and run a cable inside. Not a great solution, but I've decided just to accept it and roll with it so I can start enjoying what the Guru is primarily designed to do - control cook temps.
Thanks again to those who have chimed in with advice and theories.

Good to hear the solution.
Can the cat5 (cat6) cable be connected to a swith/router then viewed on the computer.
If so then you should be able to get a $15 wireless router, change the settings to an access point and then be to where you want.
With what you are doing any of the wireless speeds (B,G or N) will work just fine as long as your main wireless router is compatible - B or G should be no problem at all.

Good question... I was so interested in getting some sort of answer, I failed to follow up and ask about exactly what to do with the Cat5 connection once it's indoors. Initially, I was thinking that I'd just plug it into the laptop and I'll be able to connect directly to the Guru as if it were a USB device. But now that I think about it, that seems questionable. So, the saga continues. . .

This thing is essentially a wireless usb cable. It's not exactly cheap, and I have no idea about its range, but it might get around the CyberQII wireless idiosyncrasies:

This is the device I tried and ultimately returned. The best range I could get with it was 5 feet before it began cutting in and out. If you read the reviews on Amazon it would seem others had similar difficulties. :(

Dan in StL, I have a CyberQ II and I have a Cat5 cable running 50 feet max from my carport attached to the house to a hole drilled to under the house and in the house and along the wall to my PC. I have usb/cat5 adapters that attach at each end and I'm running. Call AxionTech.com at (281)575-0007 Dallas,Tx. and order USSAUSBRJXT or go here;

I believe this is the exact one I use....they don't need to be expensive...

Thanks. And this is the same make/model that Ken from Guru suggested. While I'd much prefer to be wireless, this looks to be the most cost effective and straight-forward way of getting the laptop and Guru connected.

wonder were i could find one of those here in Canada!! Been using the cyber now for a year and have yet to cook with it hooked up to the pc cause of cost of getting a usb hub.

Hi Mike, I found this. Shipping to NB is $18.xx (tax free since you are out of province). Good luck!

That's the same as what I have. Your good to go if that's what you want. I have a friend at the telephone company that ran the cat5 wire from point "a" my PC in the basement along a wall and across a ceiling through a cinder block wall under the house through my outside rock exterior to point "b" the egg. Maybe 50 feet max. These adapters were and still are being tested by the developer of the CyberQ II. His name is Damien. I exchanged emails with him many times. I have to say these people will work with you. A very good bunch in my opinion. Tim

Well I think I finally have my solution in place... Since I have plans on using this for a brisket on New Year's Eve, I didn't have time to order something online and wait for shipping. After failed attempts at Radio Shack and Best Buy, I went to a MicroCenter store that just opened up and found exactly what I needed.

The only downside was that it was expensive. I've done some initial testing with a 50' Cat 5 cable and it looks good so far. I'll be putting the whole thing into use tomorrow night for the brisket so we'll see how it all works out. -
Some times you do what you gotta do! Tim
