Larger Casters for the Nest?

Hi Gang, I've noticed that some folks have put much larger castors on their large nests. I am trying to locate some air filled casters at Caster City. I would appreciate any ideas or guidence that have worked for folks. TIA.

My wife just bought me a chimenea for our anniversary this past fall, and she went with the Large Nest. This had the large casters. I have had my Large BGE for a couple of years with the small casters. I immediately put my Large Egg into the new nest assuming it would handle better - and it is a LOT easier to move around.
Just my opinion. Haven't tried your sauce yet, but need to. I have hinted to the wife for Xmas but think I am getting coal. -
I'd like to move into a set of studded snow tires.Happy Trails~thirdeye~Barbecue is not rocket surgery -
I've called several times but I can't get to talk to Bobby, yet.

Haha, Thanks. Hey, Lump is always a good gift, but the sauce won't turn your tongue black.
-
I'm not sure if you need snow tires or a really clear map that heads south. I've always heard, "no snow gathers on a cooking egg", so what gives?

Todd,
If you go into Fastenal, you will see a ton of casters. I have the silicon wheels on a couple of eggs. They have the inflatables but you need to be careful of the screw size on the caster. Make sure the diameter of the screw is less than the width of the nest.

Hi Todd,
Keep in mind that bigger wheels will raise the center of gravity on the egg in the nest and make it more tippy...
The newer model nest with larger casters takes this into consideration and has wider spacing on the bottom. -
I agree, the current stud appears to be 3/8. I know I can ream the holes a little bit, but so far haven't found a compatable set. Thanks Bro!

They got them at Harbor Frieght in Atlanta. A friend of Charlies did the cutting and welding. They later had the tires filled with foam. When we get back home you are welcome to cone by and look at the one I got from Bobby.

Thanks Barry, Good advice! I'll be using the old style nest. I'm hoping the larger wheels will offset some of the "tip factor". Bobby has a huge set of wheels on one of his eggs, and that's similar to what I think I'm looking for.
Barry, when you get a chance, please send me your contact info including your number, again. Thanks! -
Hey Todd, here's a pic of one of Bobby's nests for the XL.The tires were air filled, but I was told that they leaked down quite often,so he had them foam filled, and from what I hear, kinda pricey I think that you'de be better off getting some larger solid casters(but that's just me and my stupid little opinion)
I put larger casters on my large nest(for chiminea)and my XL nest, and they roll much more better Here's my XL nest,I can't find the build pics, but I'll send them to ya I replaced the bottom crossbars with 3" flatstock(so I could bolt the larger casters on).
Let me know if you need any help brutha Todd -
Thanks Sam! I'd appreciate taking you up on that. They are pretty stable aren't they. BTW, I am so tickled to hear how well Diane is doing. Blessings on you both!
-
Todd,
I drilled mine out to 5/8" Might be tight going to 3/4".
You could use the flat plates and put a reciprocal plate on the top but you might run in to rust problems.

Very cool, Bro! Thanks for the pics. I hadn't realized that so much more work had been done to them. Makes sense once you see them. Looks like a good excuse to cook and get together.

They shortened the nest so it would be at normal height. It is very stable and rolls around great. Yes, we have alredy recieve our Christmas, just waiting to get home and share with everyone. As soon as Ms.D gets back to normal we are in the road showing folks what Eggs can do.We have already set some goals for 2010.

I see what you mean. I was thinking that Doug's idea of running three inch flat stock would be a good idea too. Thanks Steve!
-
Sam , if you two need anything, please let me know. I hope to venture out a bit on the comp trail too in 2010.

I went to a sweet 6" chrome spinner with street grip tires...but that's just how I roll!

Careful Smitty - the additional draft from the spinners might drive your temps up or they could generate a reverse flow as well. :woohoo:

Love it Smitty! :P
