PING Mad Max

a question from a non-board member:
I was looking over Mad Max's turkey and gravy narrative on the Naked Whiz and it says to allow 6.5 to 7 hrs @ 325 indirect of cook time. The bird was 21 lbs. Seems a little long to me but I don't want (wife) pacing the floor waiting for the bird to be done.
I like his ice bag on the breast just before the cook idea...purpose is to have the breast and thigh done at the same time.
I have been cooking turkeys outdoors for close to 50 years (Wife)has never used the oven) and have never been satisfied with my ability to estimate the cook time...it is done when it is done which sometimes doesn't go too well with prep on the rest of the meal.
We have a 24 lb bird. How much cook time would you allow?

ron, that particular cook was a little long. . .at some point i probably need to make some adjustments there at the site. ..what you should figure on is about 12 - 15 minutes per pound....and its always better to be done earlier than later. . .turkey rests just fine under aluminum foil and towels for a couple of hours. ..

i find your method gives me 12 minutes a pound or so, and remember fishless gets about the same. (unstuffed bird, with nothing other than herbs and aromatics in the cavity)

yep, about 12. now i always cook birds less than 18 pounds, maybe that factors in verse a bigger bird taking more min per pound?fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
