I think any of you/us that really get into your tables and tools would give your left...uhhh...nest table to get at one of these big chunks of wood!!!
These are slabs of cypress ALL FROM THE SAME LOG!!! When I was buying the wood for my new table. I talked to the owner of the mill in Cairo, GA about it. He didn't tell me how much he paid for it, but it came out of the Apalachicola River here in the Florida panhandle, about 30 miles from the mouth. The tree was cut down in 1830!!!!! The owner told me that he had offers from all over the country for the slabs for as much as $5k each. He's not sell. He's going to turn them into finished tables himself. Guys you are looking at over a quarter million dollars worth of wood sitting right there!!!
This is a Youtube of the thing being milled. It's a little hokey, but you get the idea.
I hope this comes out, it's my first attempt at posting pics.

OK, looks like I've done something wrong. I used the IMG buttons, with the code from Snapfish and Youtube. Any ideas?

I'm working on this and I'm beginning to get the impression that Snapfish isn't the best place to try and share a picture from. I really didn't want to use Photobucket, is there another good site?

I cant tell by these pictures but it may be what they call Sinker Cypress. When cypress is in the water for a long time it gets a lot of character from bugs and weathering, they call it Sinker Cypress. It is very expensive but beautiful wood. There were tons salvaged after Katrina I could have had but I had no where to put it.

I wish you had my number back then. :woohoo:

The place I got mine called it "deadhead". No clue what that means.

Took me a bit to find your photos using Firefox - had to pull up the page source and search for the links. Eventually got'em. You might try putting just the links in your post - use the URL function.
And I do like your tag line . . . if only you weren't from FSU . . . -
It is probably the same thing just a regional term in South Louisiana and Mississippi. It has to be in the water for a long time. There are thousands of old houses built before the turn of the century that can be had, all you have to do is ask demo and haul it off. The same guy that made that chest made me another from Cypress that had been used in a house built around 1830.

Me too. :(

Around here it's called "Pecky Cypress".

When I go back to work Monday I am going to see if is still available. Would you have means to load and haul?
