Butt Cook Time Experience

I am often amazed at the different cook times for butts when mine always take between 14 and 17 hours at 250 dome until meat hits 200 degrees. My normal sized butts always take 16 to 17 hours. I have a medium and regularly check the dome and ET-73 themometer(s). Could there be this much variation or just dome thermometers that are off?
Please post size, if you therm check, dome temp, and cooking times.
ie: MBGE, Yes, 250, 14 to 16 Hrs.

dome thermometers can get knocked out of calibration pretty easily..
i check mine often. butts for me vary in their times. i am glad i do not enter competetions because i usually have no idea when they are going to come off.. i just plan to be near the egg till they are done
and watch out for turbo butts they cook really fast!!
i have a large, 250 and 12-17 hours is pretty close. but single butts take way less time than mutiple oneshappy eggin

Usually if you ask enough question you will find people may have followed Elder Wards procedure and it will take longer.
They have set the dome at 220 degrees and that will take longer.
When I do the troop cooks I typically have four to six butts per eggs (6-9 pounds). While they may take a bit longer I am starting to pull them off my eggs around 14 hours.
I don't think I ever had a butt exceed 14 hours when I cook one for me. -
There was a shower in the trailer...

well with my cooking knowledge you had to find something i could do :pinch: :silly:

You did a marvelous job of keeping us entertained and dodging traffic for the turn-ins.

I did a 10.3 lb butt using the Elder Ward method. Held 220 - 240 and it took 19 hours before I got to 200 meat temp. I did check my dome therometer before doing this cook and made the adjustments. When I was finished there was very little fat left in the meat.
