Seared to 1.5" thick ribeyes at 700 took off egg to rest and to cool down egg. 20 min later egg at about 410 put steaks back on closed lid after alloted time opened lid to flip steaks and just as i turned second steak over something popped hadr enough to raise cast iron grid an inch or so.(about jumped out of my skin) About made me sick to my stomach I just knew my egg cracked. After very careful examination nothing is cracked or broken and for the life of me can't figure out what would have caused this. But i am very glad my egg is intact...whew

Did you look at the cast iron grid closely? It may have broke
-
thought so but i am going right now to look again. but i will say i focused on my egg mostly brb
-
If it was your grid, you may not be able to see it now. Mine cracked, but you can't find the crack when the grid is cold. When it heats up, it opens up, but when it's cold it fits back together so tight, you can't see it.
Glad I didn't hear it pop. I'd be going through the same anguish you are now. -
thats it two of the bars right at the center bar are broke. they are still completely lined up and almost impossible to see. well at least it was not my egg. any idea what would cause this other than the obvious. oh well it appears to still be usable.

I've had it happen also. It was determined that a piece of charcoal had exploded. When this happened to me I had a very clean cast iron grid with maybe.. 10-15 pieces of lump.. I heard this awful sound..thought egg had cracked, but it turned out..when I opened up the egg..noticed that my neatly placed charcoal was not in big chunks anymore, but little pieces. My cast iron grid was fine..

does yours cause you any problems?

Mine cracked the first time I used it. I heard it in the house. Im still using it. I wouldnt worry about it.
-
as it turns out i am not so lucky my grid is indeed cracked
-
I've got a crack in one of my cast iron grids and it still works just fine I noticed the crack months ago,but don't know when it happened
-
thanks. i guess that is my plan.
-
It happened just recently, so I can say no....so far.
I am assuming that it is covered under the BGE warranty, so I'm not going to worry too much about it. If it starts giving me headaches, I'll get it replaced. -
My cast iron grate "popped" at a grid joint the first time I used it at high temperature. I ran it up to 750 or so fast, anxious to try it out. I probably should have heated it up to high temperature slowly and let it cool slowly to releive the casting internal stresses at the sharp joints. No big deal though. You can hardly see it if you don't know it's cracked and it works just fine, of course.

did not read all replies but mine is cracked and the crack is invisible except at nuke temps does not affect performance and it did make a very loud noise..
~thirdeye~ cut a little piece out of his on purpose so he could drop in smoke wood with out lifting the grid -
yeah that is what i was thinking. thanks
-
mine has been used quite a bit but this was my first high temp cook. well thanks for the info
-
thanks i guess i will quit searching my egg for cracks..but i have grown quite fond of my egg and replacing it would not be an option right now. so thank goodness it was my grid.
-
Dont work about a cracked grid, mine is cracked and pieces are missing, works fine, just like the fire box.
-
If your neighbors heard it, kindly explain that you accidentally set of the internal security measures of the BGE. No worries of them touching the egg, ever!
-
no reason it shouldn't be usable. Mine did the same thing a long time ago hadn't even thought about till just now.
-
When you clean your Egg, check the firebox and the fire ring...
Mine sounded like a 22 cal when they first "popped." My, then again, maybe a chunk-a lump pooped...

popped???

Hopefully yours broke like mine did. However, mine fell off the deck 20 feet and this is how it ended up. Couldn't ask for a more perfect break. It works perfect now and is more versatile.
