YES,DO IT :woohoo: I love my cast iron grates.I don't even use my porcelain ones anymore(rarely) It is worth the money,I promise
-
I love my cast iron grate. I just finished a full summer cooking on it.
-
Use the cast iron 95% of the time.
In addition to sear marks -- the CI grate holds heat energy much more effectively.

If you don't have a cast iron grate then you should buy one! It's one of those purchases that you'll never regret.
I got mine washed it and covered it in vegetable oil and ten minutes later I cooked two New York strips on it and have never done anything more than wipe it and brush it since. (And give it a good burn at 500º form time to time.)
BTW; go to your nearest BOC welding supply store and you can get a great little wire brush for less than $5, heavy welding gloves for $12 - $15 and MAPP gas torches cheap! -
The first time you drop a steak on ur CI and hear the sizzle you'll know you made the right choice. The sear marks you get will add to the presentation too!

I have an XL egg. Is there a cast iron grate made for this size or does anyone have a "work around" idea?
Thanks...

What is wrong with the regular grate that comes with the large BGE?
-
I ordered one. It came in two pieces.
-
Peter...Nothing wrong with the "regular grate". The CI gets hotter and the wider cooking surface makes it easier to do burgers, steaks. They don't stick to the grate like on the porcelin grate IMHO.

I just took delivery of my CI grate and hope to use it tonight for the first time. It is washed oiled and looks eager to go.
-
I have a one piece that is the same size as the "regular" grate that came with my LBGE.Works great.

The XL comes in two halves . Large comes in one piece.

Thanks for the good info!
So where is the best place to order a cast iron grate for my large BGE? -
Hope about using a man hole cover?
-
They are well worth it. I use the one for my large almost all the time. And I picked up the cast iron half-moon griddle at the Egggest, and it works great.
-
I'm on my second one, love it. I use it upside down for fish (tons of surface area) and grilled onions.
Just remember, they break easy when 9000 degrees!
