Mini Heat Deflector

I am sure I stumbled onto the method for heat deflection, 4 pipe fittings on the fire ring, a nine inch pie tin covered in foil, grid on top, munchies in (standard ABT's with a chunk of cherry wood for smoke). The fittings lift the tin about 3/4 of an inch so you get plenty of air flow, think this is gonna work real nice. I am still astounded how fast this little guy heats up, I did the old oil in the paper towel lighting trick, stuck it in there, & within about 2 minutes the needle was mov'n & in less than 4 minutes it was at 600 with flame shoot'n out of the top - unbelievable (gear'n up for a big day in Philly, baseball & the birds, great weather, good food, world hasn't ended yet - life is good) B) :

That looks just too simple. Oh course it would work. Are you being "creative" again? rut row

How did your gasket fare at those temps? -RP

Well, fortunately I was standing right there watching it, so as soon as it hit I put the cap on & shut the door, it went back down to 300ish pretty fast, no damage done, but I do know that I cannot leave this thing unattended wide open for even a few minutes - I am really going to like the pittance of lump I use to get the same results I would using my large for small cooks, I am happier every day I have the little guy :)

Although the gasket survived the temperature surge, my heat deflector caused some damage after 1 hour at 300, look at the right-rear portion of the gasket, top and bottom, for melting:

  • That setup is pushing the heat directly towards the gaskets. If you made the heat deflector of something a little smaller in diameter, and made a "spider" type setup so you could put the deflector a little lower in the egg your gaskets would fare better.

That's what I expected, years ago I used a 16" pizza stone in my large and did that to my gasket. -RP
