Green egg electric starter goes bad....

had mine for a little over a year, and have been carefull to remove it after eight minutes per the instructions. However, last night when I use it, I was shocked when I pulled it off the charcoal and the outside part of the loop was in several pieces, held together only by the inside wire. Don't these normally last a lot longer than a year or so????

Depending on how much you use your Egg, no, that's probably typical. I use an electric starter, too, and they last around a year.

Didn't realize that...I assumed they would last several years.......

No, I think the high temperature thins and weakens the metallic sheath over time. Eventually it cracks open, exposing the mineral insulator and Nichrome wire.
I still use it because I get a good light with minimal mess and fuss. -
Maybe that is a signal to consider MAPP or other means to light the fire!

Little over a year, yup, normal. It gets hot and fails over time.

I have used nothing but electric starters since I started with BGE in 99....They last depending on how much you use them and how long you let them stay plugged in per use.. I have been highly satisfied with them and I use mine 3 to 5 times a wk.. They last me from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 yrs.. Replacements nearby at Walmart or Sears for $6 to $8.
