Well..I had my new digiQ II going and the pit temp set for making THE Chicken the other night.. thought while I got everything else ready I would let the digi ramp up my fire and get the egg ready for the cook..well after over an hour and not getting above 175, I pulled the fan, disconnected the digi and went manual..finished my cook, had dinner, and sometime that night it dawned on me....I hadn't opened the blower damper from when I last used the digi and was shutting down the egg!!...so that whole time I had the blower running against a closed damper!!...doh!...didn't have to admit to this, but in the interest of helping others, be SURE to check the position of the blower damper while using the digi Q!!..:blush::whistle:

  • When I got my Guru pit minder it was shipped with the damper closed and it took me two cooks to finally figure it out,I was ready to chuck it and just write it off as another scam.Boy I'm glad I didn't,it is the greatest thing for low temp stuff like jerky.

Don't beat yourself up! You've done alot of positive things to offset this mistake.
    Could happen to anyone!

Funny and educational for the rest of us:)

You were already here when I got here, so you're not a noob to me :silly:

I haven't gotten a "power assist device" for my egg. I'm enjoying learning the nuances and intricacies of controlling my egg manually. Maybe at the end of this summer I'll get one.

If my wife didn't already our "economic tax stimulus" money already tagged for savings, I'd get one now, for overnight cooks if nothing else.

Thanks swib, but it was a dumb mistake..although I will admit to having partaken of several adult beverages by that time, I woke up later and was like...doh!!...I didn't open the dang damper!!...heh!..funny how that kinda stuff just 'comes to ya' all of a sudden :)

I've done a similar thing with mine, inadvertently bumped it shut with the charcoal bag. Because I had so much faith in the Guru bringing the Egg to temp, I didn't bother to look at it while I prepped the food. Went to put the butts on and got a surprise. -RP

I called Fred when I 1st got mine and asked if it would hurt the fan deadheading it by closing the damper to much. He said since a roto fan you can close it all the way and not hurt a thing. I generaly start EGG up with open lid off as it heats up MUCH quicker then when to temp witch to open lid on. Jus alittle trick an over shoot is minimal. B) Sure could use one of your "adult beverages" as at work now and just climbed out of a incapsulated slicker suit playing in acid. Alittle warm right now!
