I have just recently moved out of the land of BBQ to a region of the country that does not practice the art as much.
One of the things I have always wanted to do is take up the cooking of BBQ as a hobbie. I am currently looking for a grill/smoker that will get me going on this.
For those of you on the forum who have used the egg, I am looking for a device that will let me slow smoke ribs, sausage, brisket, etc.
Is the green egg a good purchase for this?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Stand by for a bunch of replies.
The short answer is YES.
A longer answer is that it is the BEST.
I'm sure others will chime in with more detailed eloquent responses.

Terry,
the egg will make great bbq, grill a steak, smoke cheese and fish, pretty much anything you want to do. i have been egging for two + years mainly just making great food. lately i have begun classic bbq, pulled pork and ribs. first tries were perfect [i studied here, on the forum]. i made a pastrami a while back as well. my only regret is that i waited so long to buy one. the egg is a great hobby as well. everything tastes better on teh egg. all the stuff you read about teh food being moist is true. my kids thought the first roast chicken was undercooked it was so moist. i smoke a brined turkey breast weekly, for lunch meat. you get the idea. i do not regret my purchase, i now have 2 a large and a mini. hope you join the ranks.

Terry,
I had a Weber Kettle and Gasser, along with a New Braunfels Black Diamond up until October of last year. Sold the smoker, and the Webers are pretty much storage for my BGE accessories. I've only used the gasser once since then, and that was to cook some peppers and onions for my fajitas because the egg was cooking the chicken and steak. Solved that dilemma by purchasing another BGE last weekend. Holding out for the Texas Eggfest to get an XL to complete the set. My non-BGE grills will probably be out on the curb not too long after that.
Check out my posts from earlier (Mike's mini eggfest...) regarding what these things are capable of doing. Also, you'll be happy to know that you don't have to buy as much charcoal as you're used to buying when you cook on the BGEs.
Hope this helps with your decision. -
TMac,
As someone who lives in a part of the country where the first BBQ place just opened that serves brisket, I can sympathize with your desire for a good cooker. In all honesty, there is some BBQ where I live, mostly ribs served wet, and some is quite good. I tried for years on various kinds of cookers to make ribs that were at least close to those available from the joints. On my second attempt on the Egg, I had the best I'd ever done. Each attempt gets me a little closer.
Then I learned thru this forum that BBQ ribs, butts and briskets aren't the only thing the Egg is good for. The only thing I don't think I've done with the Egg is deep frying.
One reason BBQ isn't that big where I live is that it can hardly be done 6 -7 months out of the year. Unless, you have an Egg. Sub-zero 'Q is quite doable with an Egg, assuming the cook can make it thru the snow drifts.

Terry,
I'm a new convert to the Kingdom of Eggery, but am already a complete believer. Texan by birth, but spent some years in Memphis, we like and appreciate all kinds of cue. I was given an egg for Christmas and have not used the DCS gasser since then. Direct, indirect and don't just think meat. I tried a batch of dutch oven biscuits this past weekend and they were great.
The versatitly is certainly high. You will notice that alot of people on the forums have more than one, and I can understand why - I already want another!
My advice, buy the biggest one you can afford! -
I'm a newbie egger but with the help of this forum and our new BGE everthing I have cooked so far has has been fantastic. I have never had BBQ that has been as good as on the BGE. Cooking on the egg has now become a favorite past time of mine and I actually loook forward to cooking on it and savoring the fruits of my efforts. As many others, I have treied other charcoal grills and gas grills before getting the BGE. I only wish I had gotten one long before now. Tonight it will be baby back ribs.....yummy

I have an egg I brought over from Japan in 1970. It is made of earthenware not ceramic. It has been in use extensively ever since. It is not made to be fired up to high temps like the ceramics but I cook at 400* when called for. I also have 2 Weber kettles, a gasser and a Weber WSM. If I could sell the WSM I'd put that money into a XL BGE.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I talked with a company rep earlier today and he pretty much told me what you all have confirmed. I appreciate the help.
I've got an order in for a large. Now to start learning how to cook.....
Thanks again,

Gundog, Love the old dog in your profile. Old dogs are the best! Hope your season was better than ours.

Yes, it is a great BBQ. Get a large with a plate setter (for indirect cooking) power draft solution like a BBQ Guru or a Stoker and your first overnight cook will be a success. There are some third party accessories worth a look too. You can also use it to grill and just like your kitchen oven. I've made some of the best pizza I've ever eaten on the Egg.
Just make sure you let your fire burn clean before adding your food. Also, read Naked Whiz's site for more new user tips. Link here. Spend some time looking through the archives and post your questions here as well.
Welcome to the club. Koolaide is in the corner. ;-) -
That's great news.
You'll find cooking on the egg is more fun than se ..........
nahh, it ain't that much fun.
But it is a blast.
I've had mine a little over a year.
It's been a blast learning to cook on it (which I'm still learning - but my misses aren't nearly as bad as they used to be).
Congrats on the new purchase.
(this site is reason enough to buy an egg - there's a plethora of knowledge and information in here (most of it accurate).
