Charcoal for Long vs Hot Cooks - do you use different coals?

Greetings all,
My everyday charcoal is Jelous Devil: lumps seem consistent and work well at high or low temps.
However, I did a long cook (18+ hours) in my Large Egg and it burned out.
My question: is there a charcoal you use for long cooks or is 18 hours about the time I will get out of a Large?
Cheers, Toby

What temp are you cooking at? If you pack the egg all the way to the top of the fire ring with charcoal you should be able to go 24hrs or longer on a large at 250.
Most on this forum are fans of Rockwood charcoal for its clean burn and consistency, but length of burn time should be comparable across all brands given similar preparations.

Thank you @alaskanassasin - I filled to the top of the fire ring and was cooking between 225 and 250.
I was concerned it was the type of charcoal.

  • I have cooked at 235 degree dome on a large Egg for 21 hours and still had leftover lump in the bottom.

I use Royal Oak charcoal in the red bag and have used it foreva! Make sure it's from the U.S. if you want to try some.

Also, don't keep opening the dome.
Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!

I actually do use different charcoal for certain cooks.

    cheap lump for cheap cooks

rockwood for cooks I care about :). Also - rockwood is usually a very reasonable deal around me

oh yeah - ALWAYS load to the top of the firebox!!
