I don’t follow hockey regular season, but absolutely love the playoffs. Having the hurricanes an hour away doesn’t hurt

now - to find that elusive $39 ticket…

Best playoffs in sports. We are having a tough time through the first period, but it’s a long game.

That barn looks insane from the TV. I would love to watch a game there someday.

An original 6 man. I can respect it. It’s tough only watching teams that haven’t been relevant in the last decade. How was the Great Depression?

I’ll take the old fast rinks over the slow cornered rinks we see today.  These new rinks take the excitement away😁 I think that covers the great depression

I’m in Greensboro nc, home to the Hurricanes for their first few seasons while the Raleigh stadium got finished. I’m still bitter about them killing our minor league team (professional hockey record for largest fight of all time - the entirety of both teams and something like 32 spectators lol)…

To say games weren’t well attended is accurate.
EASports made “the most accurate hockey video game,” where you could dial in players, teams, stats, and WHERE you could play. Greensboro, included.

… I’ll never forget cracking up every time, where the rink was perfect, the boards were perfect, and the AUDIENCE was perfect:

three people waving little pennant flags…

    that was it haha…

BTW - that old minor league fight was a major catalyst in the implementation of severe penalties for leaving the bench for a fight in pro hockey that remains to this day - killing exciting pro hockey fights, forever.

    Go hurricanes!

also might mention, since I’m ranting, that this season, for the first time since the hurricanes moved to Raleigh, Greensboro got a minor league team back. Games are moderately attended, the hockey is just ok, and tickets started at $40. We used to go, with a college ID, for $1 seats on the glass, $1 beers, and $1 hotdogs. :/

I make these to snack on during the game.  It's not looking good for the home team.

I was aware  North Carolina or Las Vegas had Hockey teams, but that was about it. I followed hockey years ago when the Redwings were relevant, only because one of the laboratories I was in charge of was in Michigan, 25 years ago.  Wow, was it that long ago?

    Man, I am old.

I am. Season ticket holder to the UFL’s  Louisville Kings. They made the playoffs in their first year, pretty fun sport to watch.

it is not much, different rules, fewer teams, low budget operation, it will never be confused with the NFL or NCAA Football (any division), however you do get to see the former college, NFL players and coaches, trying their best to get a job elsewhere.

It gives you something to do before the NFL preseason starts, in a couple of months.

Best of luck to your hockey team.

Helluva recovery for the Canes last night, but they’re gonna have to tighten WAY up over the next two games…

    …..

I got curious and decided to nostalgically compare the old Greensboro team to current day on penalties, alone.

    ————-
The 1992-3 Greensboro monarchs had 2,704 penalty minutes over a 64 game season, averaging 42.3 minutes in the box, per game.

The 2025-6 Greensboro Gargoyles had 1,126 PIM over their 72 game season, with an average 15.6 PIM per game.
    —————-

lol. Damn. And that’s with eight fewer games. if the monarchs played against the gargoyles today, they’d exceed the gargoyles total PIM in the first period's haha - they spent 21% of their time in the box.

And - the gargoyles had ~13% more penalties than the league average this year. Scrappy!

This all sounds like an old guy bitching about kids on his lawn, but helps explain my belief that seeing hockey live is WAY better than on tv. Playoffs and Stanley cup being a possible caveat to that rule of thumb..

Minor league hockey is scrappy. Too much “professional courtesy” in the NHL.

anyone remember this game back in 2004

just in the third period =)

The final stanza saw the Flyers and Senators engage in the wildest game in NHL history, combining for a league-record 419 penalty minutes in a series of melees that resulted in 16 player ejections. Oh, and Philadelphia won 5-3.

Yeah.  I’m not a hockey fan, the game came on in Mute after the news, while I was preoccupied.  It was 4-0, I went to the restroom, and suddenly it’s tied!
I also noted how pervasive the damn advertising is here; Logos under the ice, flashing obnoxiously all around the rink, in every backdrop, and on the screen at all times.  From ‘83 to ‘89 I didn’t even own a TV, and I’m about ready to sell this one, again.  F****** “Give Us Your MONEYYYYY!!!”.

I’m pretty sure that game took time off my life from the stress. Had it in the bag, then didn’t. An all time great game.

Not really, Carolina is priced high because of the abnormal handle the books get from VGK. Everyone expected a low scoring boring series, but this has turned into the opposite.
