OT: Going Back To School

So after retiring I realized I don't have enough to do, so I decided to enroll at UConn and finally finish my Bachelors. CT offers a tuition waiver, and the VA is paying me a monthly stipend to attend, so I thought why not?

Will be finished in the Spring, then probably going to move on to a Masters. It has always been a goal to finish, but life seemed to always get in the way.

Anyhow, I imagine I'll be the oldest person in French I - taking French as my youngest pair of grandkids attend a French immersion school in Ottawa - we want to be able to make fun of their father (my son) without him understanding. ;)

Way to keep moving forward especially with the "every day is Saturday" lifestyle.  You majoring in Nuke Engineering?? =)

    Very Cool!
After retirement I've been considering going back to school too, but it would be for a technical/trade degree in electronics/computer interfaces.  I have two Engineering degrees and a Tech degree (explosives), and I can rewire a lamp, but I can't troubleshoot/fix a TV, HVAC system or barbeque thermometer like @Canugghead, @nolaegghead and so many others here can; I'd love to have the knowledge to do that.
@CTMike, what would be your BS degree, and what do you want to get your MS in?

My life in the Navy was a Nuclear Submarine Electronics Technician. Give me a schematic, a multimeter, and an O-scope and I can typically troubleshoot down to the complement level.

As I said above I’m just finishing up a Bachelors of General Studies, and giving serious consideration to going to UConn law school. Doubt I would ever sit for the bar at my age, but I feel it would be a nice accomplishment to look back on.

And That's exactly what I'd like to be able to do!
(you completely lost me on going into Law for your MS, but good luck on that too  :|)

One of my tours in the Navy was teaching electronic troubleshooting and repair skills. Not only did we teach students how to troubleshoot, but also soldering and circuit board repair IAW Mil-Spec standards. Probably my most enjoyable tour.

@CTMike - I am quite sure in your navy career you qualified for a "Sea Lawyer" degree with all rights and privileges attached thereto.  You are a talented instructor/teacher so instead of padding that Sea Lawyer degree why not look at what you could do in an academic environment?  If you are gonna invest the time and effort???
Remember it's Friday night (LEO in play) but with your skill set you would be welcomed in any academic field.
    No return serve expected.  ⚓️

My other thought was actually teaching at the local community college in their Nuclear Engineering Technology program.

You have served across your careers but that is how you are wired.  So, time to continue to serve in some capacity if that is where you want to go.  Gotta admit I would never have thought Nuclear Engineering Technology would now be at the community college level but the technology is experiencing a renaissance.
Again, I applaud you for recognizing the need to continue to move forward and pursue meaningful goals.
    Above all, enjoy it.

Here on the West Coast, I have access to several top JUNIOR Colleges.   Good for the student to is not wealthy to get all the lower level courses before transfer to a 4 year school.
But what I did?   Go to the woodshop classes.    Learned how to do many woodshop tasks and had access to an amazing tool set including a planar out of a Battleship.......A huge tool used for repair of any damage to wood parts....mainly decking......
Other classes at the JC includ WELDING and many others....

Congratulations! I have had lots of non-traditional age students in my courses and they always bring a wealth of experience to the classroom. It is really inspiring for the college age students to see that learning should be a lifelong goal. I’m sure your instructors will appreciate your dedication and participation.

Best wishes for your next endeavors, Mike.

Teaching Nuclear Engineering classes is what I thought of, as soon as I read the first post, but you are already considering that. I have a feeling you'd really enjoy it.

  • Congrats, Mike. I went back in my 40s and sat in Spanish I with kids half my age, and it was a blast. Showing up early, sitting up front, and using office hours shook the rust off fast. I later taught at a community college and loved working with vets.

When I got the itch to certify again, I prepped for cspm certification using a big practice test library with realistic questions and full explanations plus PDFs. It’s been around since 2014 and the mobile app made sneaking in study sessions between classes easy.

Not having enough to do is definitely a problem I wish I had…

Merci @paqman. I am having the hardest time trying the figure out the diacritical marks, but I assume that will come with time.
