"Trump signed three executive orders yesterday. One order directs the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to release a list of state and local jurisdictions that the Trump administration views as “sanctuary cities” — areas that restrict cooperation with federal officials’ efforts to arrest undocumented immigrants, and to pursue enforcement efforts. A second order directs the Trump administration to support police officers facing misconduct allegations by providing legal assistance; to review and potentially revise existing limitations on law enforcement, including federal consent decrees; to supply local law enforcement with military-grade equipment; and to take action against local officials who “unlawfully” prevent officers from performing their duties. A third executive order aims to enforce current regulations mandating that professional truck drivers demonstrate English proficiency. It instructs the Transportation Department to remove from service any driver who cannot read or speak English. Luke Broadwater and Zolan Kanno-Youngs report for the New York Times; Michelle Hackman and Tarini Parti report for the Wall Street Journal.

The new head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division has been redirecting staff to focus on combating antisemitism, anti-Christian bias, and what she terms “woke ideology,” prompting the departure of about half of the division’s lawyers in recent weeks, sources say. The division also revised the mission statements to shift focus away from addressing racial discrimination and toward opposing diversity initiatives. Hundreds of lawyers and other staff members are leaving the division en masse, with section chiefs — who had been responsible for cases involving police brutality, disability rights, and voting rights — being reassigned to roles outside their areas of legal expertise. Perry Stein and Jeremy Roebuck report for the Washington Post

A team of DOGE personnel yesterday went to the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) headquarters to evaluate the agency’s performance and alignment with Trump’s agenda, sources say. As one of the last remaining foreign aid agencies that has not yet been drastically impacted by the Trump administration, the DFC was established during the first Trump administration with bipartisan backing from Congress to support development projects in low- and middle-income countries through private sector investment. Robbie Gramer and Sophie Cai report for POLITICO

National security agencies within the Trump administration are intensifying investigations into suspected leaks to the media, with some using polygraph tests, which current and former officials say are fostering a climate of fear and harming national security. Under the direction of FBI Director Kash Patel, the bureau has recently started administering polygraph tests to track down the sources of leaks, according to an FBI spokesperson. Ellen Nakashima and Hannah Natanson report for the Washington Post

The Trump administration has dismissed hundreds of scientists and experts who had been working on publishing a flagship report on how climate change is affecting the country. The future of the report, which is required by Congress and known as the National Climate Assessment, is now at risk, experts say. Brad Plumer and Rebecca Dzombak report for the New York Times. "

"Federal election officials are indicating that states may need to commit to enforcing Trump’s directive limiting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives as a condition for receiving $15 million in election security funding. The new stipulation has prompted Democratic secretaries of state across the nation to urgently evaluate the financial, legal, and operational consequences of accepting funds from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, an independent bipartisan body. The issue is complicated by the ambiguous language in the revised federal grant agreement, which requires compliance with federal anti-discrimination laws while also referencing a Trump executive order on DEI. Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Patrick Marley report for the Washington Post.

The White House budget office is disregarding investigators as the nation’s top watchdog, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), conducts 39 separate inquiries into Trump’s extensive funding freezes, the head of the GAO’s said yesterday. Katherine Tully-McManus reports for POLITICO

Leaders from some of the country’s top universities have formed a private coalition to strategize about how to push back against the Trump administration’s attacks on research funding and academic freedom within higher education, sources say. Around 10 institutions are included, primarily from Ivy League schools and prominent private research universities in blue states. Emily Glazer, Douglas Belkin, and Juliet Chung report for the Wall Street Journal

Trump signed a pair of executive orders yesterday that provide some relief to his automotive tariffs. The orders mean carmakers will now pay a 25% tariff on auto imports without being subject to other levies, such as steel or aluminum, or on specific imports from Canada and Mexico. "Federal Election Commission employees will soon be required to report their work location in a daily questionnaire, as part of the Trump administration’s effort to track compliance with return-to-office policies and identify “unused space potentially available for disposal,” according to an email sent to FEC employees obtained by The Washington Post. “Unlike the ‘5 bullets’ this is not a strong encouragement … All employees are required to submit this daily information,” the email said. Olivia George, Aaron Weiner, and Hannah Natanson report.

The FBI has reassigned several agents photographed kneeling with protesters in Washington during the 2020 racial justice demonstrations following George Floyd’s death, sources say. The photo, taken during Trump’s first term, has been cited by conservatives as proof the FBI harbors a liberal agenda. The reassignments have sparked backlash from current and former agents, who argue that FBI personnel are not trained for riot control and that these officers were unfairly penalized for attempting to defuse a volatile situation. Ellen Nakashima and Perry Stein report for the Washington Post.

The White House has launched a new website, ‘White House Wire,’ designed to promote pro-Trump news stories, similar to the Drudge Report. The site marks the administration’s latest attempt to bypass mainstream media and present itself more favorably. Alex Isenstadt reports for Axios."

Trump signed two executive orders yesterday, with the first aiming to slash funding for NPR and PBS after accusing the broadcasters of using public funds to produce biased media coverage and “left-wing propaganda.” Trump directed the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides funding to public U.S. broadcasters, to end federal support for NPR and PBS, within the limits of the law.  The immediate effects of the order were uncertain, as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — a taxpayer-funded private entity established by Congress — is funded two years in advance to shield it from political influence. The second order establishes a new presidential commission on religious liberty, part of Trump’s wider policy campaign to combat “anti-Christian bias.” Of the new 13 member commission, 12 are Christian, and one is Jewish, leaving no representation for other religions. Qasim Nauman reports for the New York Times; Chris Cameron reports for the New York Times.

Lauren Irwin reports for The Hill.

A senior Trump appointee at the Justice Department, Emil Bove, reportedly ordered a highly aggressive investigation into student protesters at Columbia University in recent months, sparking anger and concern among career prosecutors and investigators who viewed the move as politically motivated and lacking legal foundation, sources say. The request for the inquiry faced resistance from a federal magistrate judge who believed some of the actions proposed were unwarranted and could potentially violate the First Amendment, the sources added. Devlin Barrett reports for the New York Times.

Trump is today expected to propose significant cuts to federal environmental, renewable energy, education, and foreign aid programs in a budget plan that reduces non-defense discretionary spending by over $160 billion, officials say.  Merdiith McGraw reports for the Wall Street Journal."
