Flooding here in Kentucky

We are getting record flooding in lots of areas in Ky. And the rain is still coming down. Here’s some pictures. 

For you bourbon lovers, Buffalo Trace looks like this. Wait another day or two for the river to crest and the check in building might be under water. 


This one is a road leading to my subdivision on the hill. There’saroad to the left of the telephone poles

. Some towns are under mandatory evacuation

    Nowhere near Kentucky’s problems here. But I saw a SUV at a 45 degree sideways angle in a ditch a half hour ago. I guess he was turning and couldn’t see the edge of the road.

    the first two are near West Point Ky, Dixie highway is the main road. Last picture is of the flood wall in Frankfort Ky

    All good here as long as I am selective in driving anywhere.  The Ohio River is scheduled to crest Wednesday at around 35.6 Ft (upper gauge) in Louisville which would clock in around number 10 all time- with the top spot at 52Ft in 1937 before the flood walls were developed. 
    This flood is a protracted event as we have seen 9" of rain in the last week so the duration will be quite extended.  The weather front has finally moved east.
    BTW-lost power for around an hour today (no rain, no wind) as the utility company shifted our main input to an alternative circuit as flooding was gonna impact that feeder line.  (I have always voted for the secondary option-to no avail).  
    All good here as a BGE laughs at some kind of external power.  
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    @caliking - this is nothing like you experienced with Harvey a few years ago.  Thanks for the note.
    I don't care about any discussions regarding climate change for the long-term but in the here-and-now the storms are packing more intensity and longer duration.  
    My golf ball sized hail artifact from 3/15/25-

    And that was an hour after the pummeling in 60*F outside ambient temp.
    Most intense hail storm (by an order of magnitude) I have experienced.

    Shortly after the hail snow storm hit-
    Yep- major damage.  
    Good news-watertight integrity maintained-skylights and windows (aid by screens-destroyed) held.

    We just returned from France, and where we live is about 5 miles from the river in an area called the Highlands here in Louisville. We were fortunate as some low lying areas here were flooded but nothing life threatening. 

    We left in March went to Bordeaux for the wedding of our daughter and stayed there until the 16th. We missed the bad weather.

    after the wedding, Suzy and I extended our stay in France, with stops in Paris, Beaune, Carcassone with a quick trip to the Pyrenees close to the Spanish Border. 

    I am hopeful the weather has not been a problem for anyone and certainly our folks here. 

    We were on the phone almost daily and we were saddened by the disaster experienced again here in Kentucky. 

    A couple years ago a town was blown off the map with a tornado, and a community washed away by flooding. 

    Climate change is real. We are living in it.

    I’m glad you didn’t suffer any significant damage from the flooding. I’ve talked to a few in the area and it’s been devastating and the recovery will take time.

    Last 2 weeks we have had multiple Tornado Warnings. Easter Sunday there were I think 3 different tornados and last week we also had I believe 3 different tornados. Also some flash flooding but nothing too severe. Certainly nothing like Kentucky !

    I am from the shadows of Appalachia and still have folks there I have spoke with. It was Brutal. 

    Now there is no FEMA to help.
