Used eggs

How do you feel about buying an egg used? Mine is about 10 years old and I’ve used the warranty on all the ceramics except for the dome over that time. I’ve actually used it for the firebox twice. I’ve been wanting to get a second egg for some more space And always am perusing Facebook. I’ve recently seen a couple decent deals on another extra large, but I’m kind of nervous to not have the warranty.

  • Started with used Eggs before deciding I wanted ones with warranties. A few years back, I then bought a “used” (one time, I suspect) MiniMax for the front porch. It included a stand I wanted for other, warrantied MM, and the price was good enough that it seemed worth it to me. About eight of so years on from my warrantied Large purchase, I now have some cracks in some of the internals, but haven’t bothered doing anything about them just yet.

So for me, it’s warrantied Eggs, unless the price is so good or the accessories included prove too tempting to pass up on.

I would be very wary about buying a used XL. I think the XL bases are more prone to cracks.

One cracked base and you are on the losing end of the deal.

The peace of mind is worth the extra cash for me.

  • Yea, I mean good point is one crack and it could be over. New egg, and it’ll never end  :o

Looking at an XL with nest and all the accessories for $900

I'm with DoubleEgger on the XL and cracking. I don't think I'd risk it on a used XL with seeing all kinds of warranty claims on the base throughout the years.

I agree with @WeberWho and @DoubleEgger, however I do think I would risk it on a MM.
With a purchase price of $900, if you crack the base that’s another $500 and if the fire bowl cracks like they do on the large that’s another $300, the new parts would then carry a lifetime warranty though I think. Or you could get a brand new xl in nest for 2k. Possibly it would depend on the accessories that might tip the scales

My XL has been cracked for probably 7-8 years, from the corner of the vent, down and all the way across the bottom. It sits in the original nest, fwiw.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I’ve bought 2, both used no regrets, a mini brand new never used and a large with custom stand , ton of accessories storage cabinet. I think $600 for both , I’ve replaced the firebox on the large and gave the mini away

I bought a used L from the neighbor (1)- he bought it new so when I needed to replace the the base he pulled the warranty.

Gave that to another neighbor (2) as I got a free used XL from yet another neighbor (3).

Neighbor (3) had a new base since it was cracked he threw in the deal.  I have been running on just an XL now for 6+ years no issues.  I dont run hot cooks on it, I have a Recteq for Pizzas.

  • I have bought 3 used Eggs, with no issues whatsoever, though not an XL - a large and 2 smalls. Why not wait on a deal on a smaller egg?
Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 5 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!
