Whaddya know?  There is an actual diagnosis for my malady.  

Touchscreens don't like me.  On both my iPhone and my iPad I sometimes have to touch the screen a couple times for my touch to register, and I really have to poke at the touchscreens at the ATM.  The touchscreen thermostat that was installed with my new heat pump/furnace system won't let my finger register at all.  Fortunately there's a workaround described in the article, so I'll be walking around with a sausage in my pocket from now on (actually, I already have a pack of those metal styluses so I'll just have to get in the habit of carrying one).
