Good deal. I've been watching this thread as I need to adjust my lid a bit. But was worried I wouldn't be able to get it all working again. Way to go Big Green Egg!!
Fish, Hunt, Cook....anything else?

I had similar issue MANY, many years ago with my first XL. But I had band slippage from day 1. BGE also replaced my Base and Dome. It’s definitely strange that it never happened prior to you removing them for gasket.joey_price said:Well, this is interesting. If you look back at my first post you will see my phone number. I posted it because I was serious, I would have paid somebody to come fix it. BGE reads these forums and today I got a call from them asking about my problem. They confirmed what ColtsFan and HeavyG said about the mis-shapen domes from a few years back and are going to replace it under warranty. I'm on my own with the uncessessary 2nd set of bands though. Pretty great of them to reach out to me unsolicited to help solve the problem.
I'd also like to thank everybody here that took time on a Mother's Day Sunday to offer help and suggestions. Very much appreciated. I guess we will find out some timehis week if it's the dome or the EggHead.
Thanks again,

Well now. That is quite a move right there. I never mentioned this because it didn't occur to me that the domes would be different, but this is not the original top. That was replaced a few years back and I didn't have this problem with it until I took it off to replace the gasket. I am not one of those that cooks in the egg many times a week, so I suspect I was getting lucky. I can say I was never happy with the way it opened and closed after the 2nd dome.Photo Egg said:

You can tighten those bolts all you want and the band will not tighten. Your clamp is between the hinges, you are only pulling on the hinge bolts and that won't allow the clamp to squeeze the dome. Your clamps need to be left outside the hinge with you facing the handle.
-
This is the back of my XL if it helps as reference for your earlier question about hinges etc

My bolts, and every egg shown in this thread, has the bolts between the hinges.

Dude... go buy a lottery ticket... NOW!
Really swell of HQ to reach out and take care of the dome under warranty. Not throwing shade at BGE, but they don't usually operate like that

No offense…but your picture is of an old style band and not the new style…trust me…Haley said:

It sure looks like you can't squeeze the band because you are only pulling between the hinge bolts which has no give. Mine is a 14 year old large. Maybe things have changed since then. -
My MiniMax has that big bracket between the hinges that prevent the bolts from being between the hinges. You are correct, it wouldn't work with that bracket holding them apart.

I just looked at my MiniMax. It is between the hinges too , but, the acorn nuts at the hinges are slotted. I would say to get a tighter squeeze you need to loosen those acorn nuts to allow the band to pull tighter. Then retighten the acorn nuts.

I doubt loosening the acorn nuts will make a difference. The bolts held by the acorn nuts aren't fixed to the dome, and move with the band. Anything that tightens to pull the end tabs on the band closer, should tighten the dome.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

What a scrape. If it worked before what ta heck changed? We have got to figure this out. I don't like to see unhappy Eggers. There is a lot of experience here, I'm sure someone can figure it out. I just looked at his photo with the band off the dome, it doesn't look like the studs are fixed to his dome. When I replace the gasket on my large with the old style band the studs are flush with the band and not attached to the dome. I would still try loosening ALL the acorn nuts and see if the band will squeeze tighter, then retighten all the acorn nuts again. Don't get discouraged, someone will know what to do.

Excellent news! Props to BGE

Not a solution, just two datums. Both my Large and my Small have the clamps outside of the hinge area. Neither have slotted holes in the top strap, can't see if they're cut into the bottom strap (wouldn't make any sense, with the old design, mechanically, to do so).
I looked at my profile to see if I could figure out when I joined the forum (when I bought my Large) but couldn't find it. I think both my Eggs are >10 yrs old."Hallelujah, Noel, be it Heaven or Hell,

Large over ten years old: clamps outside hinge area.
XL almost ten years old: clamps between hinges, upper hinge brackets have slots. Will try loosening upper hinge nuts and see if I can get the clamps closer, just for fun, why not

The left and right side will pull together even if the acorn nuts were welded to bands on this style of XL bands. If you could actually see the entire band system you would see it ‘s not an issue on this Egg.Haley said:What a scrape. If it worked before what ta heck changed? We have got to figure this out. You can loosen them to adjust fit better between dome and base hinge.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas
