Metal found in cowboy lump

Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who uses cowboy lump charcoal. I'm kinda new to this smoking thing and havnt really opened up to many bags of lump in my life yet, but when I opened one up today I found a metal piece in it. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone using cowboy lump to double check your lump before lighting a fire. If this piece was galvanized and heated to around 400 degrees it would of let off toxic fumes. I messaged cowboy and am waiting for a response.

Likely a piece of strap from loading the kiln. Switch brands. Cowboy is garbage~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

Relax - that is not galvanized anyway!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Didn't seem galvanized but still, I messaged them and Want to see what they have to say about it.
All charcoal is kinda the same to me, I just go for lowest price. I bought 10 bags of this from cotsco last year on sale, lowest price I've seen in my area so far. -
As has been mentioned, that is just a piece of metal strapping and is nothing to worry about. I haven't had one of those in a bag for a few years but it does sometimes happen.
I think Cowboy is fine for hot/fast grilling but it is not my first choice for using in a kamado if doing a long, lower temp cook. It is hard to beat the price tho when Costco has it on sale.“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K. Diçk -
You get what you pay for, and I agree, for me Cowboy has been garbage and would suggest you try another brand.

That is true, but can we all agree Cowboy Lump (not the kind in jeans that buckle bunnies dig) is like "The People's Temple" of religions?lousubcap said:Lump discussions here are like religion and politics elsewhere.Curious if you will ever get a reply.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

I've used cowboy for my overnight brisket with my flameboos and it held lower temps great? It smokes a little when starting up but seems ok. It's unbelievable to me that other brands are double the price for the same size bag.
I really want to try jelious devil but it's hard to justify the price point. -

from what ive seen over the years , it makes me believe they have more than one plant location. cowboy is fine in my area. both for hot and low cooks. starts to burn clean as quick as any other lump ive used. its also changed over the years several times and not always for the better, then changed again

It's the metal strapping that holds the slabs together when they go in the kiln. That thing has been fired to over 1500F, so no need to be worried. Hopefully those straps pull out at one big piece, but they break apart sometimes.
Magnets above the bagging line grab them, but if they are under a large piece or wedged in a piece of charcoal, then the magnet can't lift it. -
I've found a couple pliers in my lump over the years."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

GWN Costco Cowboy lump price went up to $21.99 to reflect metal price increase 🙈canuckland

The Basques is up a good $5 from past years as well. I certainly hope they can substantiate the increase with commensurate metal content.Canugghead said:GWN Costco Cowboy lump price went up to $21.99 to reflect metal price increase 🙈 -
All kidding aside, it's the cost of diesel fuel more than anything else. While you don't need a drop of it for the actual production, you need it to get the wood out of the forest, to the mill, to the charcoal plant, loaded in the kilns, out of the kilns, to the distributor, and then to the retailer. Same goes for the bags, shrinkwrap, etc and really EVERY product for sale.
This country runs on diesel fuel. The government could get the gasoline prices to a buck a gallon to save face if they wanted to, but theres going to be no where to drive when you can't afford to buy anything at a store if diesel goes above $5-6 a gallon in the Midwest. This country is way too big and reliant on the imports to be doing anything to inflate diesel costs any more than they already are.

As a proud owner of yet my third diesel powered Mercedes Benz automobile I have personally felt this highly ridiculous price rip off for diesel fuel! As you so well explained it - the cost of "everything" will continue to rise!
And then don't even get me started trying to ask all these lovers of their EV cars and trucks just where and from WHAT source the hell they think all this electricity is coming from! And if they think it is from the wind and the sun...har har har...I'm just SO SORRY I'll be dead by the time ALL these EV owners realize they got duped!!!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
Back in the day, Pops shipped his MB 240D to India, when the family moved in 1982.
India has historically highly subsidized diesel, so he reaped the benefits, while the price of petrol continually rose. One of the many smart things he's done.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -
Diesel used to be cheaper than gas, it flipped, what, 10 years or so ago? I have no idea why it flipped then, but I am intrigued by all of the conspiracy theories about it, so keep 'em coming and tell me who to blame.

I'm not sure who is getting duped and what about, but I believe EVs are cheaper to run than gas or diesel cars.RRP said:As a proud owner of yet my third diesel powered Mercedes Benz automobile I have personally felt this highly ridiculous price rip off for diesel fuel! Used to be able to dump old deep fryer oil right in the tanks of those Mercedes diesels and they’d run, no problem…RRP said:As a proud owner of yet my third diesel powered Mercedes Benz automobile I have personally felt this highly ridiculous price rip off for diesel fuel!
