Reggulator vs Smokeware Cap

I’m curious on opinions of the BGE Reggulator or the Smokeware Cap. I’ve had some sticking issues with the Reggulator and thinking of swItching. 

Thoughts?

    Over time both will get sticky from creosote and will need to be cleaned! The shiney Smokeware cap obviously will show the discoloration sooner than the black reggulator.

    The rEGGulator is nice.  But, it can get pretty sticky.

    Easy Off Oven cleaner!- Just be careful using it as it is pretty "mean stuff" but does the job! I place my cap and Smokeware pieces in a large plastic bag before spraying them! (IOW you have to be careful using Easy Off since ANY over spray will KILL any green foliage!

    I'm still using the old DFMT (predecessor to the Reggulator) and still happy with it. Tried the Smokeware cap but really didn't like it that much.

    The only other thing I use a lot is the Smobot, which is a truly great product IMHO.

    I retired my DFMT with a Smokeware cap to prevent rain from entering the egg during low-und-slo's, and it works!  Hasn't rained since.

    The Smokeware cap gets really nasty quick, and gunks up to where it’s hard to move.  I did the cleaning Ron suggested with Easy Off, and sold it after I got it clean!
    Had the rEggulator on my XL, and loved it.  I kept it from sticking by wiping the underside surface of the sliding top with a rag while it’s still warm.  And put it on the grate over hot coals every few months to clean the inside.

    I have 3 Smokeware caps on my eggs.  I love them.  I haven't cleaned them in probably 10 years, aside from a quick wipe down of the exterior.  They still work great and never had a problem with them sticking.

    I cook year round.

    I had the smokeware caps on both my xl and small. My new mini max and mini's came with the reggulator and I see no reason to spend the money on a smokeware cap. They are both equally likely to get gunked up (actually i think the reggulator is easier to maintain) and both keep their settings.

    I've used them all.  Reggulator is my #1 pick, daisy wheel #2, and smokeware comes in at #17.

    I have had a much different experience with my Smokeware cap.  I have had it for several years.  No issues with it gunking up, etc.  I think I have cleaned once, but that was when I was doing a deep cleaning of everything.

    I can vouch for the EasyOff.  Use the yellow can.  I laid down some cardboard in my utility sink and wore some nitrile gloves (probably should have had a mask for the fumes).  That enabled me to turn the regulator to coat everything.  Then I stuck it in a plastic bag.  I forgot about it so it went a little over 24 hours sealed in the bag.  Rinsed it with hot water and it came out spotless and nimble.  Mine was seized up from trying to burn it off in the egg like a lot of directions say.

    The EasyOff Oven Cleaner did not harm the regulator at all. 
    I sprayed the clean regulator down with high temperature cooking spray and wiped it down really good.  I had removed the silicone tip and rain cover insert to burn it off.  I called BGE customer service to find out how to reattach the tip.  Since I had sprayed it down with the cooking spray, Bruce with BGE said to clean the surface on the regulator where the tip attaches with acetone (nail polish remover).  Then use a tiny bit of Super Glue or Gorilla Glue to reattach the tip.  He offered to send me the tip and the rain cover insert because sometimes the tip gets damaged in the removal process.  Mine was fine.  Note that the insert for the rain cover does not need to be glued.

    I had given up on the regulator and purchased the Smokeware chimney.  I used it once and it got so hot you couldn't touch it without wearing gloves to adjust the airflow.  They need to extend the lever to adjust to maybe scrub off some heat.  That's when I decided to try and do what I could to salvage the regulator.  I figured if the EasyOff ruined it, I was going to discard it anyway since it was seized in the open position from burning it off.

    Long live the regulator!  This was on my medium BGE.  I also have an XL BGE.
