OT- ice forming under freezer
poster
Posts: 1,348
I have a small chest freezer that I noticed dripping water underneath lately (freezer is only 5.5 ft^3 and is full to the top). The only info I could find online was to look for a clogged drain tube, which I haven't been able to find yet. When I looked underneath I noticed about 2lbs of ice hanging. I chipped it off and checked again the next day and it had formed again. I was going to empty it and flip it over tonight to have a better look, but before I do I thought I would ask if anyone had any ideas of the issue causing this. The freezer is working fine and the water is not from anything melting on the inside.

Sounds like a void in the insulation , is this new or used ? Chest freezers do not defrost, the only drain typically has a cap that you open when you do a manual defrost which should be done periodically ( as needed YMMV) I would do a complete defrost and restart ,

If you lay the freezer on its side or back I'd caution about plugging it back in for the amount of time it sat on its side or back. It's maybe different with newer freezers but let the refrigerant settle so it doesn't ruin your compressor. I'm no expert though..."The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

yes, let it set upright for a while so oil will drain back into the compressor , a slug if liquid can damage the valvesWeberWho said:If you lay the freezer on its side or back I'd caution about plugging it back in for the amount of time it sat on its side or back. I bought it new 6 or 7 years ago. The problem is recent. There is a plug up front that when pulled nothing comes out. I will take everything out and try a full defrost and see what gives. Thanks guyslkapigian said:Sounds like a void in the insulation , is this new or used ? That plug up front is for when you do a full manual defrost , it will drain them out of there .. my guess is the insulation got moisture behind it where you are seeing form on the outside , not much you can do about it, and may take a long time to form again after a full defrostposter said:

After the weekend I will empty and unplug. It does sit on a concrete basement floor too. I will try and elevate it some how to get more air underneath and see what happens
