Best way to get a BGE? And what else to get?

  • Lots of good info above. I bought my large BGE at an eggfest and would do so again. Saved $150-$200 as a I recall and it included a few basic accessories. Having said that, not sure I would have wanted to wait six months to pick it up. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be happy with the purchase and make the most of it. Welcome aboard!

Steepleton’s in Louisville is also locally owned and provides excellent customer support. I bought both of mine from there, and will buy my 3rd as well, from them.

The least expensive aspect of owning a Big Green Egg, is the initial purchase. The real expense is the lifestyle which follows.

My retirement will be me working at Walmart, and I have told my children there is no Santa Claus, and that a college education is overrated.

  • I live in Elizabethtown, which is at minimum 30 miles south of Louisville, so it's doubtful that any will deliver and even if they do, it'll be $$.

Local Ace Hardware guy told me that their rep told them that the eggs are going up in price. He didn't have a L in stock, but he had the price tag still for it. $997 but he said that it's gone up a couple hundred effective last Friday.

I called the dealer in Bardstown KY and they do have a L in stock. $997. They will deliver with a fee...don't know how much. But more than likely I'll have them assemble there then transport home myself.

Just gotta have the finance manager give the final approval. ;)

It would almost be easier to take it home in boxes than transport assembled. Especially if you have someone to help you assemble.

@JohnfromKentucky - have you talked with Brownsboro Hardware?  I don't know their radius limit but I live around 15 miles from their store and not an issue.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.
  • @lousubcap I have not. They are even further away from me @43 miles. Bardstown is only 24 miles. They told me that a L could sit on the front passenger seat no problem. I could use the seatbelt :)

I am not sure I would want to wrestle a large egg out of the passenger seat, even with the guts removed.

I wrestled a mini-max out of the passenger seat and it was no fun.  The mini-max is like 70 pounds with the insides out.

A large is 162 assembled, so figure 120-130 pounds, empty, and absolutely nothing to grab ahold of.  Sure, two guys off a tailgate, no problem.  One guy (because the door will be in the way for two guys) could lead to devastation!

I have taken two larges home in boxes.  The assembly is a piece of cake.  The folks here can give you sound advice.

Whatever you decide, good luck, man!

Very valid points! Thank you! I did not know that and so that changes things considerably.

So no comments about the potential price hike?
  • John please do not put that egg in your passenger seat. A small fender bender could turn into something much more. Not worth it.

1K for a large BGE? Ouch. Did Kamado Joe also go up?

what was the price previously? I haven't seen anything under $997

Price increase doesn't surprise me, most things go up in price due to inflation or scarcity in parts. Ford is about to shut down multiple plants due to chip shortage. Wouldn't surprise me to see the price of their cars/trucks go up.

I couldn't tell you what is was previously but I know in the last couple years Eggfest prices were high 7's low 8's with a nest, plate setter, and a bag of charcoal. 1K is getting pretty pricey for just the grill itself.

Lowes was blowing out KJs, you might still find a deal.

Also, I second the recommendation of bringing home in boxes. It's much easier to move that way.

@JohnfromKentucky what exactly is included for $997?  If they are including a plate setter, nest, charcoal, grid lifter, starter cubes, and ash tool I think that is pretty sweet deal.

If it is for a straight up egg, bare bones, I agree that $997 might be a bit much.  But, who knows these days.  Have you seen the cost of brisket?

  • I looked on ace and just the nekked egg is $999 also out of stock.
swmbo bought mine in 2017 for $849 so I guess its not that far of a stretch.

As far as I know, it's just the egg.

Here's what I'm thinking....that if in fact these eggs last as long as they say, and I don't see a reason why they shouldn't, then that alone is worth the price of admission. I have had 3 grills in ~10 years. So let's say they cost $300/each, right there would have paid for the egg.

I'm all for investing in something that lasts.

@r@RyanStl re: Komodo Joe, I asked my brother why he didn't get one instead of the egg, he said his neighbor had one and it didn't last 5 years. Now, I don't know how that KJ was treated, but I have always heard good things about the green egg, so why mess with a good thing and go cheap?

I think dropping $3000 on the floor install has made my wife hesitate until we can build up another grand without dipping into savings.

One of the Ace dealers in Denver and Colorado Springs (same franchise owner) was selling "post Eggfest" large with Eggmates, platesetter, a bag of Rockwood and no charge for delivery within a 25 mile radius. $900 plus tax. I was at the Colorado Spring Ace two weeks ago and still had one left.

  • @lousubcap I called Brownsboro hardware....they do have them in stock, but as far as I can tell, nothing left over from last years eggfest. He said that they start taking reservations next month for one.

I might have to just visit the store and see what they have.

I brought my XL Egg home in boxes in my truck. I assembled the nest first, slit open the box the base was in, slid the base off the tailgate into the nest, and rolled it to the back yard. Not overly difficult. The rest of the assembly was simple.

There are some real good deals on new eggs on Facebook Marketplace. Typical savings are 25-50% for brand new eggs in unopened boxes.

Purchased mine from Brownsboro Hardware in Louisville too.  They assembled and delivered and they have been great in the past supporting me.  Had an issue with the Nest and they came and fixed it.  I ordered the handler that connects to the Nest and makes moving it around a lot easier and safer, especially over composite driveways.  They came and added that.  Great company.  I looked at buying one at their Eggfest when I purchased mine, but it wasn't that close to the time.  I seem to recall the discount was that they didn't charge for the Nest.  Could be wrong, but that's what I recall.

  • I have looked on FB marketplace and there are some good deals, but will the warranty transfer?

I would have to disassemble the eggs…would it be just the bands to remove the top? Couldn’t I wrap them in blankets to transport? (Wife sitting in back to hold on to them)

In my opinion, a truck or a trailer is your best bet.  Beg, borrow, or rent one of those.

If they aren’t in a box, it would seem that in the bed of a truck it would be hard to secure one

Warranty won't transfer over. They need to be purchased through a certified dealer. (Keep any and all receipts regarding the purchase)

I bought my large used and disassembled it to bring it home, pretty simple really
    1 remove guts
2 remove side tables if equipped
3 zip tie the bands together at the hinge so they can’t spring open
4 loosen band for the dome, remove dome
5 loosen base band and remove bands

When you get home reverse the procedure, there are several band adjustment threads floating around on the net to help you get the alignment right.

I brought that one home in the back seat of my truck with the seat folded up and the pieces on the floorboard.

In my mind the only thing you give up buying used is the breakage coverage. If it’s a couple years old and been cooked on I wouldn’t be worried about damage by heat. If you drop something and break it that’s another story.

I got such a killer deal on mine I couldn’t pass it up. It took the warranty question out of the equation.

    I found this one.  $950
    8-9 years old
Large Big Green Egg Smoker / Grill. Works perfectly. Zero cracks on the egg. Kept under a cover at all times. Lots of extras being included such as: custom built cedar table on wheels with granite plates, ash pan with ash tool, grate lift, plate setter (for indirect cooking), cast iron cooking grate, cover and entire new large bag of BGE branded charcoal

This one wouldn't have to be disassembled to transport and would be easier to secure down in the bed of a truck.

I know I wouldn't be getting a warranty, but what exactly does the warranty cover? Any way I can read it online?

What happens if he gave me all the receipts for the purchase....could I then get warranty?

Here's a pic with the dome open. Would there be anything I need to look/check?

Ok, looking at the warranty online, I don't think I have much to worry about if i purchase used.

Warranty coverage does not extend to scratches, dents, chips, crazing, fading, changes in appearances of ceramic components and non-structural blemishes that do not affect the performance or structural integrity of the EGG.

Due to the expansion and contraction of ceramic components during heat cycles, hairline cracks, crazing or surface cracks may appear, which is normal for ceramic materials, and will not result in warranty coverage unless accompanied by a loss of structural integrity or breakage.

I found the parts link. How often do you all replace the gasket?
