I'm thinking of getting an infrared thermometer

I have a DeWalt one that I use for measuring the temperature of the floor of my pizza oven.   Works great.

Not sure but it wasn’t terribly expensive.  I think I bought the cheapest one.

I have that one too.   Works just fine.  Great company. 

Mine is an older one from Thermoworks and at that time it even came with a plug in probe which made it even dual purpose! I still use the simple infrared aspect for more than just cooking! You can look for drafty window and door leaks for instance.I even use mine in my workshop to tell me when my brass branding iron is the proper temperature to brand my wood project without ruining it!

I have a fluke. I used it for pizza temps. Works okay but you need to think about it a bit to make sure you're getting the right data.

Works great on the egg, grill and other non mammal things.  Fails completely on humans, dogs etc.

If you set the emissivity to 0.78 it will approximate the temperature you would get when taken orally.

Emissivity of skin is 0.95-0.99, but your forehead temp runs lower than oral/rectal temp, so you set the emissivity to 0.78 as an off-set for the temperature delta.

I suspect a large portion of the IR guns people used during the pandemic were set incorrectly and the users didn't understand the peculiarities of non-contact IR readings.

Nice to know- I just bought one for use with people.  That way SWMBO isnt "borrowing" my stuff only for me to never find it.

Don’t do this with dogs. Seriously.   It F’s up their brains.  Something about not being able to let go once out of sight, they get neurotic trying to find it.  I’ve read this before, but worth a check with @DuckDogDr
