“Angus” has a lot of the same letters as “Anus”

There is an angus bull here locally in Rockwall where I live that I have appropriately nicknamed Heff. Not because it's a female but because everytime we pass by that dude is plowin a different cow. MF'er looks like a Rhino walking around. My guess is he's probably around 2,500-3,000 pounds. He's easily close to 6-7ft tall. Wonder what he would fetch at an auction....

Angus is in high demand because it’s also pretty much the only commercially readily available beef.SGH said:

Black Angus tastes no different than Red Angus. No more than a brunette tastes different than a blonde. In fact, a steer can be 49% red angus, and you can sell it as black angus.Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk -
Long time ago my dad and uncle had a small joint venture raising cattle. They got angus cows and breed them to a Brahma bull named Smokey. Problem was we didn’t keep a large enough harem for Smokey. He would jump a 5 strand fence , go to the neighbors pastures, whip their bulls and breed their cows.

Selling choice beef branded as "Black Angus" at the same price as prime beef is a pet peeve of mine. So is organic producePigBeanUs said:

The value isn't pure size for beef cattle, it's in growth rate of progeny. Expensive bulls are expensive because their offspring pile on the lbs faster and more efficiently.TEXASBGE2018 said:There is an angus bull here locally in Rockwall where I live that I have appropriately nicknamed Heff. One of the requirements for the black angus requirements is literally being a black cow with no proof of angus pedigree.PigBeanUs said:

side note to livestock genetics, just like race horses there is a lot of money in maintaining high quality purebreds in a range of cattle/swine breeds. Former grad students family raised purebred Charolais, they are cross bred with angus to produce a bulkier/meatier cow.Reminds me in the early 2000’s I went to a premium swine auction with my brother, he was looking for a new boar. First boar in the door went for $10k, we looked at each other and agreed we were at the wrong auction. -
Old boy is likely off to a life of luxury being kept in a climate controlled environment and well groomed/fed. However, he’ll likely never be in direct contact with another cow except for on the other side of a gate to get his “dander up.”dbCooper said: -

I was with our red and blacks today. Our girls do not even get to see the bull. They all get a shot to bring them into heat. Just had a black angus inseminated with American wagyu. Also an Irish Dexter crossed with a wagyu as well. Should be a good crosses. I hope. We will see in a couple years.
