RIP Knucksie

Phil Niekro........one of the best pitchers I've ever seen throw a baseball and easily the best knuckle ball I've witnessed. He was my dad's favorite pitcher and a bright spot on a perpetually bad Braves team.

Yep.  He was a class act.  I grew up as a Braves fan.

  • The 1982 season comes to mind right away. I'm pretty sure most of the state of Alabama adopted the Braves as their team that year. 13-0 start. If they weren't on tv I remember listening on AM radio. Good memories. Phil had a heck of a season that year.

When I was in Little League, we had Bob Uecker as a guest speaker for our season opener.  He told a story about being interviewed, and was asked what the secret was for catching a knuckle ball.  His answer was "wait until it stops rolling and pick it up".

When the knuckler was working, Niekro was almost unhittable.  When it wasn't, it was like he was pitching batting practice.

    RIP.

Great pitcher and competitor.  Always enjoyed watching him pitch due to the unpredictable nature of his knuckler.  RIP.
