Every December the Lincoln Indian Center has a coat drive, for the benefit of those living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. This year, thanks to friends and neighbors, Angie and I rounded up about 25 to donate. We dropped them off this afternoon and left with more than we bargained for. While at the Center we learned of a recent burglary at one of the reservation program buildings. The theft included gifts intended for numerous kids in need. Let that sink in for a bit.
For some reason this just gets to me, enough that I looked up a article on the crime. Turns out to be even more dastardly than the verbal version I got. We've decided to direct some compensation up their way. Like the coats, it won't solve the underlying issues but, hopefully it helps some.
Snippet from article I found:

The Grinch came early this year, ransacking a popular youth program on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation and leaving some in the tribal community wondering who could be so heartless.
Last Wednesday night, a burglar broke down a door to the Bear Program, a youth and suicide nonprofit that operates in Billy Mills Hall, a community center in Pine Ridge.
The thief stole three guitars, four computers, shoes, four animal hides
used to make drums, sketch pads, colored markers, paints, two gaming
systems and wrapped presents that the program’s organizers planned to
give to children at Christmas."Complete article here:

From age 15 to 23 I worked in a "specialty" trailer factory, mostly the "office trailers" you see on construction sites, but we did a lot of unique stuff too, like airport terminals for Alaska, x-ray facilities, and we did a whole bunch of double-wides to use as schoolhouses for one of the SD reservations. A couple of my coworkers got sent out to seal them together, and before they even arrived the first two halves were broken into, all copper piping ripped out, and the local scrap metal and liquor businesses reported upticks in business.
We used PVC in the rest of the halves...
