Lump size reducer - my way!

RRP
RRP Posts: 26,451
I know some here like to find big chunks of lump in their bags, but I don't. When one falls out I throw it in a bag until I have quite a few and then break them with a hammer. Today I just finished making this screen device which I will lay on my driveway and smack those chunks. The large end is 20" wide and the narrow is 11" which is perfect to fit inside a 10# bag so the pieces can tumble in easily. That's simple .5" hardware cloth. As for why I decided to use a 2x4 for construction? That's just me - build its to outlast me! LOL

I was hoping to see some sort of Rube Goldberg guillotine-like device.

  • Yeah, I was hoping for something far more dangerous. Looks like it should work great.

You mean something kinda like a hard boiled egg slicer maybe? I'll have to think about that design. B)

I would straddle that over my garbage can, pour out my Kick-Ash Can onto it, and pour the small, unburned lump pieces left behind back into my Egg.
But I'm miserly like that.   ;)

I thinking somewhere I may have lost a person or two...I never, nor do I think I ever will have to whack a big piece more than once. The screen is merely to let any resulting lump dust or tiny pieces fall through onto my drive. I never meant I would be beating the lump into such tiny pieces as to fall through that .5" screen!

That’s a pretty cool hack Ron.  I’m just wondering what you should call it.  The Pratt LumpSmacker, maybe?  Or how about the Lumpinator?

Ain't much a BFH (big friggin hammer) can't solve.
The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

Got to do something like that tomorrow. The new large doesn’t have a KAB yet and I need to deep clean the ash out . Need to readd the unburnt pieces and some fresh lump afterwards.

Is there any way you could maybe post a short demonstration?

Of hitting a large piece of lump charcoal with a hammer while it was placed on that screen area while on my driveway? I think you are pulling my leg, so the obvious answer is no.

I think that every time I lift my KAB out.  But the reality is you only get those pieces on clean or shake they burn up otherwise... thats what I tell myself anyway.

This attachment for your cordless drill would make lump size reduction effortless...

  • Perhaps the confusion is in the description. The item pictured by the op could only be described as a “reduced lump sieve”.

If Ron doesn’t want to do this for the forum, maybe we can have someone stage a re-enactment?

I think the really important thing here is we can all run out and order that murder hornet drill attachment and start taking heads off of things.

I wish I had that problem.  When I can find lump it turns out to be more like it was run over with a steam roller.

I never realized this was an issue.  If I get a lump that seems too big, I just whack it with the pointed end of the ash tool.  Works great.
